هنا يتحدث الدكتور عبد الوهاب الافندي عن اهتماماته البحثيه وعن عدد من انشطته السابقة وانجازاته البحثية في العالمين العربى والاسلامي بجانب مشاركاته الاكاديمية والبحثية في العديد من دول العالم:
My research interests fall into three broad, but closely intertwined, categories which could be subsumed under the theme “the crisis of modern Islamic thought”. The first category relates to problems and challenges facing modern Islamic thought, in particular competing attempts to reinterpret traditional Islamic doctrine in the light of the challenges thrown up by modernity. A special focus has been the examination of the debates over the compatibility between Islamic values and modern democratic values and practices. The second, which is closely related to the first, focuses on contemporary Muslim politics. This covers issues which include democratization, the Islamic revival and the politics of Islamism, the debates over political violence and terrorism, the relations between Muslim countries and the wider world and the challenges facing Muslim minorities in the West. The third area focuses more specifically on Sudanese politics, with special reference to Islamist politics, and the interaction between Sudan and its immediate neighbours. This covers issues which include democratization and conflict resolution in Sudan and peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.
Most of my research projects try to bring one or two of these strands together (and in the case of some publications on Sudan, all three), since it is my belief that the linkages are themselves significant. For the deep crisis of modern Islamic thought is most evident when this thought is tested in practice, and in particular in the realm of politics. This can be seen when political manipulation distorts or impedes the intellectual debate, or when accepted ideas or preferred interpretations of religious values create serious problems when implemented in practice. I have also sought to critically engage and interrogate the current research agenda on Islam and politics and highlight areas where a serious rethinking is called for. This is due to my belief that this exchange cannot remain one-sided. It is not only Islamic ideas that need to be reinterpreted in the light of the modern experience; many key presuppositions of modernity also need to be reinterpreted and questioned as well. And this questioning needs to go deeper and much further than the mere critique of modern approaches to studying Islam and Muslim societies (as in the critique of Orientalism).
I am gratified that my work in all these areas has been widely cited and discussed, and figures in syllabuses in such diverse areas as South Africa, Malaysia, Norway, Sweden, the UK and numerous leading US universities. My books have been translated into Turkish, Malay and Arabic and a new Malay translation of one of my books (in conjunction of a new expanded edition) is due to come out in 2008.
I have received grants and fellowships from St. Anthony’s College, Oxford, the Brookings Institution, the United States Institute of Peace, the Christian Michelsen Institute, the National Endowment for Democracy, the American University in Beirut, the McArthur Foundation and Northwestern University, among others. I have also been a lead researcher in projects which at the UNDP (with additioanl support from the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development). The Democracy and Islam Programme received funding from the governments of Qatar, the US, Germany and Norway for its events and research. In the period 2004-2007, the Programme benefited from a Quintin Hogg grant. We are also currently in discussions with a number of partners, including the Qatar Foundation (Doha), CSID (Washington DC), The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, The International Institute for the Study of Islam in the Modern World (ISIM) in the Netherlands, and the University of York on joint projects.
I have also been member of the consultative council of internationally acclaimed Arab Human Development Report (published by the UNDP) and was one of the core authors of the Arab Human Development Report 2004: Towards Freedom in the Arab world (described by the New York Times as “one of the finest U.N. products under Kofi Annan”. I have also contributed to The Arab Human Development Report 2005: Toward the rise of women in the Arab world.
I have been asked to act as referee/rreviewer for the ESRC, the International Journal of Middle Eastern Studies, The American Journal of Islamic Social Science, Political Studies, Totalitarian Movements and Political Religions, Nationalism and Ethnic Politics, Journal of Intervention and State Building, and Ethnicities, as well as Oxford University Press, and the Centre for Arab Unity Studies.
I have delivered keynote addresses around the world, including the universities of Harvard, Berkeley, Oxford, LSE, Birmingham, Yale, Georgetown, Bradford, Villanova and Leeds; also at the Woodrow Wilson Centre, the Brookings Institution, the National Endowment for Democracy, the United States Institute of Peace, the Kuala Lumpur Islamic Forum, Wilton Park, IGAD/InterAfrica Group (Addis Ababa and Khartoum), the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace/ Al-Watan Newspaper (Kuwait), the International Institute for Islamic Thought (London, Washington DC and Istanbul), the Carter Centre (Atlanta) The Qatar Foundation (Doha), Al-Jazeera Forum (Doha), The Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies (Abu Dhabi) the Cenre for Arab Unity Studies (Beirut), the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the State Department and National Intelligence Council.
In addition, I have acted as advisor to governments, regional bodies and NGOs engaged in peacemaking in the Horn of Africa from 1993-2002, and continue to be consulted by the UN, UNESCO, the International Criminal Court, the FCO, EU and various US government agencies on issues within my expertise. I am member of the Board of Directors of InterAfrica Group (Addis Ababa), the Commission on British Muslims and Islamophobia (UK) and the International Foundation for Islamic Dialogue (UK), and also member of the Sudan Peace Support Council (Washington DC) and Fellow of the 21st Century Trust (a UK-based international leadership forum).
I am frequently asked to comment in the media on issues related to Muslim politics and other areas of my expertise. I have been interviewed by, or taken part in programmes on, the BBC (radio and television), Channle 4, Sky News, Al-Jazeera (Arabic and English), Dubai TV, ANN, LBC, Al-Arabiyya, Iranian TV, Sudanese TV, Syrian TV, and Kuwait Radio, among others. I have also been interviewed or contributed to Newsweek, Al-Hayat, AlQuds Al-Arabi, Muslim News, Q-News, Emel, al-Raya, etc.
I have just submitted a grant application to the British Academy for a three-year research project on theories of power. I am also currently preparing an ESRC grant application on the contribution of Western Muslim intellectuals to the current debate on Islamic reform.
In 2006 I was awarded The Muslim News Allama Iqbal Prize for Creativity in Islamic Thought.
