Re: رابطة السودانيين المناهضين للطائفية (Re: خالد)

Dear Adil and Dear Mohamed Osman,

Thank you for your insights. Founding this umbrella organization is a deed of the first order if we can all follow through. I full heartedly agree with the proposal you have outlined, and would like to join hands with you.

You have clearly defined sectarianism as it relates to political gain. You are not, as vividly explained, against any religious sect, or even members of sectarian parties. You are against those who are using them to achieve political and economic ends. As you have skillfully outlined before, you are not against the “Umma Party” members, you are against El-Sadig El-Mahdi’s family, as it tries to advance its selfish ends on the shoulders of others. Thus you are trying to isolate sectarians from “sectarian leaders,” who willfully capitalize on their family names, without any known merit.

However, I think, with the brilliance I see in your understanding of things, you should note that not all sectarians and sectarian leaders wear the same garb. With the Democratic Unionist Party, you see a different dynamic than what you see with the Umma Party. I am not trying to make light of the fact that both are equally “sectrain.” But rather, I would like you to look at the DUP as way ahead of the Umma Party in ridding itself of sectarianism, even though it has not done so as fully as we want it. The deconstruction -and by definition the reconstruction- in this party started far earlier than the case is with its historical rival. Here, I want you to deeply consider what Dr. Yasir, Fathi Buhairi, and Adil Amin are trying to tell you.

I am a Republican Brother who has fought sectarianism all his adult life. I continue to do so, fireclay. In my tenure as an active member of the Sudanese intellectual and political scene, since 1977, I have seen the Democratic Unionist Party make huge strides toward democratization of its ranks. Even though it has not succeeded yet in fully accomplishing this goal, yet the actions of its leadership speaks louder than words.

Look at the firm stance of Al-Mirghani besides his brother Dr. John Garang. This good and noble man, joined hands with that good visionary and courageous man in a rare happenstance of history: a traditional religious leader from the North + a revolutionary sharp minded leader from the South = Rebirth of a country. History will show, and very soon, that we have embarked on the monumental task of building the New Sudan. All this would not have been possible without these two good men.

Please take note that I am talking about Mohamed Osman Al-Mirghani and Dr. John Garang as individuals, just like me and you. But these two men are mighty individuals, who clearly tell us that there are many mighty individuals, like you, who are going to populate a New Sudan, with millions of mighty individuals, who will form a nation, unlike any other nation. What a beautiful NATION would it be!!

Let me go back to my Republican roots now. Garang and Mirgani, and millions of ordinary Sudanese, just like me and you, will have to learn the biggest lesson taught us in our political history in the Sudan. Ustaz Mahmoud Mohamed Taha has, single handedly, taught us on January 18, 1985 that absolute individual freedom is worth living for, and it is worth dying for. It is worth living and dying for with a huge smile; not in fear, and not with fear. I know that Dr. Garnag has fully incorporated this tutorial in his lesson plan. He learned the lesson and he is now a huge fan of Ustaz Mahmoud. I know this for a fact. I am not sure if Al-Mirghani has learned this lesson though as Dr Garang has. But I trust Dr. Garang’s judgment. He seems to think that Al-Mirghani is a living symbol of real “Sudaneseness.”

I have dealt with these two men from a very close range, even though I have not met them in person yet!! In time, I will tell you, how close this range was. But let me, very briefly; say here that the late Republican brother Taha Ismail Abu Garga, was one of my dear brothers and surrogates who met Dr. Garnag in person. As for the range from which I observed the Democratic Unionist Party, let me tell you this anecdote, and I will let you surmise its essence.

I n 1986, shortly after the Intifada, I went to Halfa Al-Jadeeda (Village 23) to condole my kins on the passing Abdoon Abdelrahman, the last great grandfather in my family. My mother’s uncle, Mohamed Osman Abderhaman, the respected former “sectarian” parliamentarian from that district (since independence, and till the May regime) asked me if I could join the Democratic Unionist Party. He said, he would “guarantee” my success in the upcoming elections if I chose to do so.

I was then a recent graduate of the University of Khartoum and very vibrant and active in the post-Intifada period. He liked the persuasive style we, the Republicans, have, but he couldn’t understand that once I leave my Republican ideas and princples to join a “sectarian” party I would lose my ethical and moral integrity, and maybe my persuasive edge with it. Anyway, I politely laughed at his suggestion and said “I can’t do that.” Later on, Mohamed Tawfeeq, the post-Intafada Information Minister, may his soul rest in peace, became the choice, and, fortunately, no one in the DUP except for a tiny minority, had even heard of my name.

Had I not been a Republican Brother, a son of Al-Ustaz Mahmoud and his relentless anti-sectarian rearing, I would have succumbed to the lure, glare, and ludicrous glory of politics. I am glad that my good fortune has made me a son of this Greatest of all Men, who smilingly gave his life to protect his dignity and freedom, and the freedom and dignity of the Sudanese people.

I am telling you all this ya Adil, so that you understand the close range from which I personally, and many millions, of the Sudanese people have dealt with sectarianism. You see Adil, you and I have succeeded in the past to dispel the negative influences of the menace of sectarianism from our lives. In fact most Sudanese intellectuals now are on the same boat with us. But millions, upon millions, upon millions, have not been as fortunate as we are in terms of education, and the political trial and error this education may entail.

Therefore, I would like you to take a deep breath, sit back, and rethink your stances from sectarians as opposed to sectarian leaders. I don’t need any final word from you today on any of the above thoughts, because there is not such thing as the “final word” on any thing for that matter. But I would like you to rethink about the huge transformation we all are going through, with particular attention to the transformation that Mr. Mohamed Osman Al-Mirghani is going through.

This man is going through a deep transformation, as we all are. Even Al-Sadig Al-Mahdi is going through a “forced” transformation, but of a lower quality and lesser pace. Please, rethink as you fight sectarianism, by winning the hearts and minds of “sectarians.” This will lead to a natural “death” by suffocation, for the enemy that caused millions, upon millions, upon millions of deaths in our beloved country.

I am with you, with Garang, Al-Miraghani, Mansour Khalid, Al-Basir –I know you disagree with me on this one-, Sherif Harir, and all, absolutely all, who are willing to go all the way to achieve that natural death. Now is the time to do this peacefully. I think now is absolutley the time to do it peacefully, and it will be achieved peacefully “Kan 3alla Rabik 7atman Maqdia.”
