Press Statement
• Yesterday, Saturday 25th August, Sayed Mubarak ElMahdi, the detained Umma Party Chairman finally underwent a gastro-endoscopy at Sahiroon Specialized Hospital.
• This procedure comes both 43 days, after Sayed Mubarak's arrest by the National Intelligence and Security Service, and following the Party Chairman's continued requests to security forces during that time to facilitate the procedure which he was scheduled, under the recommendation of his doctor, to undergo on the very day of his arrest.
• Sayed Mubarak ElMahdi was escorted into Sahiroon Specialized hospital by 15 heavily armed members of the NISS, while a commensurate force surrounded the hospital. The Umma Party Chairman was surrounded by armed NISS officers throughout the duration of his hospital stay, even within the operating room and during the gastro-endoscopy procedure.
• The results of the gastro-endoscopy carried out by the Umma Party Chairman on Saturday reflected the poor conditions of the Chairman's detention by the NISS with Sayed Mubarak's personal doctor, who carried out the procedure, indicating in his report that there had been a clear lengthening of the esophageal hiatus hernia from which Sayed Mubarak suffers while indicating that the Party Chairman had newly contracted severe infections to both the stomach and duodenum, while his weight continues to deteriorate.
• Sayed Mubarak's doctor has prescribed a six-week medication program which includes a strict diet and regular movement whilst indicating the unsuitability of the conditions of the Umma Party Chairman's detention, which involves his solitary confinement, to the success of the prescribed recovery program. Sayed Mubarak's doctor also indicated that the Party Chairman's condition requires significant monitoring and rest which he cannot expect to receive under his present detention, warning the accompanying members of the NISS force of the seriousness of this condition which if not treated could lead to hemorrhaging and even cancer to the stomach.
• Sayed Mubarak's doctor further explained that the significant deterioration of the Umma Party Chairman's condition is due largely to the delay on the part of NISS to facilitate the required gastro-endoscopy and the subsequent prescribed medication.
• While facilitation of this procedure was approved by the Ministry of Justice's appointed Legal Committee as early as August 14th, all attempts to transfer the Umma Party Chairman to a health facility had been resisted by NISS which still holds Sayed Mubarak's custody. The procedure was finally facilitated on
25th August following the intervention of the Minister of Justice and following five days during which Sayed Mubarak suffered severe breathing difficulties which led security forces to transfer him to the NISS-owned Al-Amal Hospital. Upon examining Sayed Mubarak, NISS's appointed doctor confirmed that the breathing difficulties were directly related to Sayed Mubarak's unaddressed stomach condition and strongly advised NISS officials to immediately facilitate a gastro-endoscopy and any subsequent treatment.
• On a related front, on Thursday 23rd August the legal team appointed to defend Sayed Mubarak ElMahdi represented by Dr. Amin Mekki Medani and Mr. Mahdi Bakhit Hamid were refused entry to their client despite being granted visitation by the appointed Legal Committee. The official explanation given by Mr. Yasser Ahmed Mohamed, Chair of the Legal Committee appointed to investigate in the case of the alleged sabotage/coup attempt in which Sayed Mubarak has been accused, was that confusion had ensued with regards the scheduling of lawyers' appointments and that legal visitation would be rescheduled for Tuesday 28th August.
• We consider the cancellation and rescheduling of legal visitation as further evidence of the 'delay tactics' being employed by the authorities with regards the case of Sayed Mubarak ElMahdi, and a clear reflection of the unlawful basis of his arrest and detention which violates both his constitutionally granted rights and all principles of international human rights laws.
• We hereby reiterate Sayid Mubarak ElMahdi's belief in reaching a peaceful and just solution to the Sudan's issues, a solution that is based on dialogue and democracy and condemn his arrest, at the hands of the National Intelligence and Security Service, in a clear attempt designed to curb his political activity and derail his ongoing initiatives to form a united and democratic national front.
• We hold the National Intelligence and Security Service responsible for the deterioration Sayed Mubarak's health and for any other harm that caused during his arrest and period of detention. We call upon national, regional and international organizations to apply pressure on the Sudanese authorities to guarantee the constitutional, legal and human rights of Sayed Mubarak and all other detainees.
