You started a very important topic that is not usually treated with respect despite the importance of the subject and its historic value.
In order to illustrate my point I need to draw on the history of Congo. Most of what was written earlier was done through the eyes of the white adminstrators of King Leopold with their slanted vision of the savage native who was being civilised by the occupation. The truth was far from that as King Leopold was brutalising the indigenous population, stealing the country resources while swelling his coffers, and the impression given was of people who had no history or civilisation.
This situation continued until Congo was visited by the black American historian George Washington Williams (a son of a freed slave) and later by the black American Reverend William H. Sheppard. The two used the oral history and the native tribes songs to piece a picture of the real Congo before the start of the crimes of the Belgians and their occupation after Stanley journeys.
Their methodology proved to be the only way to know about the real history of Congo as no native records existed apart from the few surviving letters of King Alfonso I (ManiKongo Nzinga Mbemba Affonso) to the Portugese Monarch protesting the activities of the slave traders.
These songs are a record of the social history of the country and their study and understanding will give a better idea about the social development of the majority and not the elite.
I hope one day scholars take these songs seriously as a record of our social history.
