Girls' songs from a socio-ecnomic perspective
|
The songs performed by Sudanese girls in wedding cermonies talk their minds and serve as a medium to express their hopes and wishes. They also tell us the socio-ecnomic changes that take place in our society. As Sudanese girls are not allowed to publicly express hearts fealings, they find in the songs an undirect approach to do so. Despite the simplisity of the songs, they remain important witness of the changes in the girls' dreams of future husbands. In the 60s the songs centred around students as they were the hopes of the nation and their families; such as 7amada songs. In the 70s the teachers and public servants got their share' During this era the songs reflect an oposition or rejection to the trend of marrying old men; such as: al shayib da alla benee wa benoo...etc. The 80s songs were directed towards the fortunate migrants to the oil producing countries and the merchants especially those from Western Sudan. In the 90s the dream of a girl is to marry an emigrant in Europe or North America and the song reflect that new trend. There is a lot to be said about this type of song which I enjoy alot .
