Background

The UK Government's approach to Sudan has shifted importantly over the last 12 months. FCO Africa Director Neil Wigan completed the inaugural UK-Sudan Dialogue in March this year, signalling his intention to work with the Sudanese Government on issues of trafficking, migration, extremism and others. Following the visit, Ambassador Michael Aron commented that he looks forward to the 'ongoing dialogue' between the two nations.

At a European level, the UK took over the chairmanship of the EU-Horn of Africa Migration Route Initiative, also known as the Khartoum Process, a programme aimed at working with the Sudanese Government to control irregular migration from the Horn of Africa. Most recently, this process was supported by a €40 million Better Migration Management fund announced by European Union Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development in Khartoum last month.

The APPG is delighted to have renowned expert Professor Eric Reeves, Sudanese academic and specialist on the Khartoum Process Dr Mohamed Abdelsalam Babiker, and scholar Douglas Johnson on a panel to discuss these developments.rnational Criminal Court (ICC), the unfair blockade.
He referred to the honorable stances and the strong decisions adopted by the African Union in supporting Sudan concerning the ICC and the unfair embargo.
