Held in Khartoum on Monday March 21, 2016 the first constituent meeting, under which the first building block of the Darfur Doctors Association is formed. The Association hopes to include in its membership all the medical staff of the sons of the area inside and outside Sudan, while keeping the door open for sympathetic non-Darfurian cadres to join and participate in the association.

The meeting has resulted into the formation of the association steering committee which includes three coordination offices, two offices for Internal and External Coordination, and one office that will be responsible for the Financial Affairs. This is considered to be an initial step leading up to the Executive Council elections which will be held in August, 2016. The presidency offices came as follows:

1. Internal Coordination Office, headed by Dr. Musa Mohammed Abakar.

2. External Coordination Office, headed by Dr. Ashraf Izzeldin Elamin.

3. Financial Office, headed by Dr. Alnour Muhammed Yagoub.

Dr. Ashraf Elamin stated that the meeting was the result of the intensive efforts of some great Darfurian doctors working in the health field inside and outside Sudan, together with the active contribution of many generous people who are very concerned with the deteriorated health conditions in which Darfurians are living in.

The Head of the External Coordination Office has also stressed that the idea behind the composition of the Association as a civil society organization has become one of the biggest responsibilities of the sons of the province since the ruling regime has started to expel and exclude most of the international organizations working in Darfur, which led to the creation of a huge vacuum and deep gap in the provision of medical services for the citizens of the region and conflict zones in particular.

In the context of attracting enough memberships to the Association, Head of the Financial Office, Dr. Alnour Muhammed Yagoub mentioned that Darfur has gave birth to many of the finest cadres of the nation and now the time has come for those elite to pay back the debt where they can participate fully in the provision of the required medical services to the people of the territory, their support and contribution can be either financially, morally, logistically or through media.

On the other hand, Dr. Ashraf Izzeldin Elamin has reiterated that amongst the priorities of the Association is to address international human rights organizations to exert more effective pressure on the regime to abide by the rules of international law and the laws of civil wars which control the internal armed conflicts with respect to the treatment of prisoners, civilians, patients and wounded in military operations.

Dr. Elamin also stressed the need to stop what the Sudanese Air Force is doing where they targets unarmed civilians who resides in areas under the control of the Darfur armed movements, as bombardment of those areas with rockets and explosive barrels on a continuous basis makes the task of civil society organizations, associations and health organizations a suicidal mission to deliver necessary aid.
