History reminds us that 400 years ago in Jamestown, Virginia, USA, the chief of the Powhatan Indians (Natives) who wrongly thought that English colonists would self destruct and die off due to famine and disease without his intervention. Almost 75% of colonists who arrived in early 16th century had died on their own. But more convoys kept coming from England and eventually they were able to prevail over the resourceful and stronger force of the Indian Empire. They did that through ecological imperialism whereby they replaced and changed native’s living landscape and culture to make it easier for them to adapt, but was intolerable to the Indian’s. The colony was established in early 17th century to plant the seed of contemporary USA.
It is engrossing to observe how history repeats itself in the Darfur issue in the sense that more Arabphones or Afro-Arabs from the neighboring countries are pouring into Sudan coalescing with local Janjaweed militia outlaws killing and burning innocent civilians and resettling in their land in order to establish a so-called Arabs empire. The Janjaweed terrorists and the separatists Nile elites in the north along with the successive governments of Sudan have decided that the indigenous black people of Darfur (Zurga) are cluttering the capital cities and central Sudan for the fear of causing bewildering cultural changes that would affect their quality of life. In addition, the Zurga are occupying a region with plethora of natural resources that they do not deserve - or so they claim. They are held responsible for turning everything they touched into black and erasing the Arabic features and culture that they dearly cherish. For this reason, they initially instigated wars on the capital peripheries driving away and de-stabilizing black population who migrated from Darfur. Even though it is a well known fact based on the recent University of Khartoum DNA study that there does not exist any elements and strains with genes similar to the Arab genes in Sudan. But there is still a strong misguided belief that Darfur is an Arab land and does not belong to Africans and therefore Zurga tribes must be eliminated and completely erased using scorched-earth offensive. This idea is an old one, and has been perpetuated and supported by the successive governments, opportunists and the northern elites in order to kill and hold-off the northward migration and aspirations of Zurga tribes in its infancy and replace them with Arabic race.
History does not need to be an exact repetition of what happened to the Native Indian, and it is still not too late for the Zurga tribes to alter it and stop this atrocious colonization. If the transitional government and its operatives do not seriously resolve the persisting ethnic cleansing and genocide in Darfur and other margins, the Zurga must institute a self defense charter that allows all tribes to arm themselves against the terrorist Janjaweed and protect themselves and their families from extinction. Of course, this is done in parallel with full support of Juba peace process and the transitional government attempts to protect civilians. The Zurga tribes in Darfur should not to be fooled by the half-baked measures taken by the United States whether it is lifting of sanctions or visa restrictions for individuals whom we don’t know. Or taking Sudan’s name off the list of states sponsoring terrorism, normalization of relations with Israel and talking about infringement of Eritrea into Sudan’s sovereignty, all of which are mere distractions from the true survival of the Zurga in Darfur.
Darfuris in the frontlines must fight to stop extermination of the African black tribes in the region as if there is no tomorrow and with all they have got. Self-defense campaign must begin immediately by training all family members’ women and men, villagers, communities, individual tribes and coalition of all Zurga tribes irrespective of regions, which can eventually transmogrify to form Zurga Defense Front. The call is for all Zurga refugees and immigrants in diasporas to take the solemn responsibly of providing the necessary tools to defeat the terrorist aggression and secure land for survival.
