Europe Day is celebrated by 28 European countries globally and in particular with the eight resident EU member states Embassies in Sudan. The event was attended by Sudanese officials, civil society, media and accredited diplomats to Sudan. Kamal Ismael, State Minister of Foreign Affairs represented the Government of Sudan.
During the event, Ambassador Tomas Ulicny, Head of Delegation of the European Union signed development cooperation agreements with the United Nations Environmental Programme and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. The projects worth 6.5 million Euros will improve the management of natural resources in the States of Darfur and West Kordofan.
Kamal Ismael, State Minister of Foreign Affairs praised the recent progress in relations between Sudan and the European Union. Sudan is an important partner in the challenging region. He called for strengthening of development aid and a stronger EU role in debt relief.
Ambassador Tomas Ulicny observed that the EU relations with Sudan have witnessed significant development, notably after an exchange of ministerial and expert level visits between Brussels and Khartoum over the last five months. The EU and Sudan are conducting political dialogue at all levels to achieve better understanding of each other's priorities, interests and concerns.
The European Union Ambassador said "These visits enabled both sides to frankly exchange views on areas of mutual concern, including new areas such as irregular migration which has become one of the main topics for the EU in relations with Sudan."
Ambassador Ulicny said the European Union remains committed to lasting peace and reconciliation based on credible and comprehensive dialogue process that includes all actual parties of the Sudan. "I can assure you that the resolution of conflicts and a genuine inclusive political solution in Sudan remains central to the EU long-term approach to Sudan and to the EU policy in the Horn of Africa."
The European Union Ambassador called for a durable peace to be based on promoting human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the freedom of expression and media, good mutual relations with all the neighbors of Sudan, dialogue among civilizations and confronting extremism, addressing poverty, achieving gender equality and fostering equal opportunities to the young people of Sudan.
During his fifth and final Europe day celebration in Sudan, Ambassador Tomas said that the European Union is ready to work with all the Sudanese stakeholders who are committed to peace and development of Sudan as a moderate, modern, and peace devoted nation that further promotes well-being of its entire people, and the universality of human rights in the world.
