تهانى عيد الميلاد و مسـتقبل ووحدة السـودان

    Salam Dears

Several posts in this board touched on the issue of congratulating Christians on the occasion of Christmas and some gave us the views of some sheikhs on the issue.
I will start by asking a simple question: What am I supposed to do if my Christian colleague congratulates me on the occasion of Eid? Is it halal to thank him/her for his/her feelings towards me or just ignore if not to tell them I can’t accept their congratulations because they are “kafir”?

I am troubled by some of the views rendered here because if this is the attitude Sudanese Muslims are supposed to observe then there is no chance for the future of Sudan in this world never mind its unity. We can’t claim respect for others when we treat them in this way. We can’t claim that Islam afforded equality to all if we can’t even be civil to our brothers in their festivities.
Some may ask why I am making a big thing of this issue and my response is that if we can’t come together in something as simple as this then how can we believe in the possibility of living together in one country?
How can a southerner believe that he/she will be treated as a human being in a united Sudan? How can anyone convince a Christian Southerner to vote for a united country if they are not prepared to exchange the simplest of human acts?
Another issue which is troubling here is the tendency of some people to accept some dictate without thinking about it. Let us not forget that Sheikh Binbaz was the same Sheikh who until the early 80s was describing as heretic anyone who claimed that the earth is a sphere or it revolved around the sun. Many of us who remember the 80s will never forget that infamous cover of “al-Majala” after Prince Sultan excursion into space in the American Shuttle. After that shuttle trip we no longer heard of the matter again so who was wrong: the so called heretics or Sheikh Binbaz?
I just hope we have an open and learned discussion about this issue and not dogma!
My apologies for those who prefer Arabic text as I am a beginner in that department and any one who let me know about a programme that teach Arabic typing will be doing me a great favour.
Merry Xmas for all our Christian colleagues in this board and the best wishes for a peaceful and prosperous new year for all.
