DARFUR Union in the UK:- Horrific Videos Show Desecration and Mutilation of Body of Late Khamis Abdel Allah Abaker, Governor of West Darfur, Who was Killed by RSF

    * Recent videos have shown RSF personnel desecrating and mutilating the body of Mr. Khamis Abdel Allah Abaker by stoning, while families of RSF and Janjaweed soldiers celebrated this horrific act

    * Two new videos have recently emerged which showed war crimes being committed by RSF soldiers and their allied Janjaweed militia in Elgeneina

    * The political group's decision to grant impunity to the terrorist organisation (RSF) has emboldened them to commit war crimes. These politicians are morally bankrupt and complicit in these crimes

A series horrific videos has surfaced on multiple social media outlets showing the desecration and mutilation of the body of the late Governor of West Darfur, Khamis Abdel Allah Abaker. Mr. Abaker was killed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Elgeneina, Sudan, on June 14, 2023. He was in the custody of RSF commander of West Darfur Abdelrahman Juma Barak Allah (ref. 1).

There are four videos (exhibits) in total, two that have been presented as evidence in the case of the late governor's killing. Two of the videos were recently released and below is a breakdown of the content of each.

Exhibit A: This video shows Governor Khamis being abducted and detained by RSF forces a few hours after his TV interview. He is seen being escorted out of a pickup truck by RSF Commander Abdelrahman Juma Barak Allah and into a small office. As he is about to enter the office, he is attacked with a chair and the footage cuts off (ref. #).
Exhibit B: This video shows the bodies of Governor Khamis and his brother lying on the ground after they have been killed. Both men have deep wounds on their faces. People can be heard in the background talking about the deaths, using foul language. One person says, "See, you're dead now."
Exhibit C: This video was recently released and is believed to have been recorded on the day of Governor Khamis' assassination. It shows his body being run over and over by a pickup truck. Men and women are seen surrounding the body, watching this horrific act with jubilant chants; they crowd are believed to be relative of the RSF and Janjaweed members carrying out this horrific crimes, or belongs ti the same kin of the RSF and Janjaweed soldiers .
Exhibit D: This video was also recently released and is also believed to have been recorded on the day of Governor Khamis' assassination. It is very graphic and shows his body being stoned to death. Someone then comes and grabs his legs and starts dragging his body away, which prompts the crowd to shout, "Leave it there!" The late governor's knees appear to have been dislocated and his body is covered in deep cuts and injuries. His upper body has been stripped of clothing in an act of complete desecration.

The videos are all very disturbing and graphic. They provide strong evidence of the brutal and inhumane way in which Governor Khamis was killed. All of the videos described in this piece were seemed to be recorded by the RSF members.

The DARFUR Union in the UK have presented an account of two videos to the UK government, FCDO (ref. 2) as well as in the meeting with the deputy prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ref. 3). Exhibits C and D, will be submitted on 27th August 2023, and presented in a meeting w/c 4th September 2023.

The videos are a reminder of the ongoing violence and human rights abuses in Sudan. The RSF is a notorious militia that has been carrying out war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur, as cited in the Human Right Watch reports (ref. 4, ref. 5).

The international community must take action to stop the violence and human rights abuses in Darfur. The perpetrators of these crimes must be held accountable.

The DARFUR Union in the UK and other sister organisations have said they will work with Human Rights Watch (HRW) and the International Criminal Court (ICC) to bring the perpetrators of the killing of West Darfur Governor Khamis Abdel Allah Abaker to justice.
In a statement, the DARFUR Union said the videos of Abaker's desecrated and mutilated body was "a clear war crime" and that the RSF leaders must be held accountable. The statement said the DARFUR Union and sister organisations will continue working with HRW and the ICC to provide all available evidence and testimonies from witnesses to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The ICC has already opened an new investigation into war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur. The DARFUR Union's statement is a reminder that the international community is watching the situation in Sudan and that those responsible for human rights abuses will be held accountable.

In it is important to reiterate that in his briefing to the United Nations Security Council, the General Prosecutor of the ICC Karim Khan said that the ICC is investigating “alleged” new war crimes in West Darfur and added “We are by any analysis not on the precipice of a human catastrophe but in the very midst of one” (ref. 6).

International Community Must Apply Pressure to Protect the Civilians in Sudan

Since the killing of West Darfur Governor Khamis Abdel Allah Abaker, and the desecration of his body, many more systematic crimes have taken place in Darfur by this terrorist organisation. Therefore it is a must to hold the leaders of RSF accountable for all the crimes against humanity and war crimes they have committed against the civilians of Darfur, in particular in Elgeneina and Mistri (ref. 7), Sirba (ref. 8), Murnei (ref. 9); also in other parts of the region such Kutum (ref. 10), Zallengei (ref. 11) and previous Nyala (ref. 12), all of which were covered in the Union’s periodically issued reports, with the latest report covering the use of rape by RSF and their allied Janjaweed militia as a weapon against the women and girls of West Darfur (ref. 13), as well as the political cover given to this notorious militia by the political groups for impunity. In addition to the latest assassinations of civilians in Nyala by RSF on the basis of ethnicity; it is important to mention the horrific killing of Ahmed Abaker Bargo Abdelrahman killed in his house by RSF in front of his family (wife, daughters sons, and grandchildren (ref. 14)).

The Darfur Union in the UK is urging the UK government to take further action to help the people of Darfur. The group is calling on the UK to:
Increase humanitarian assistance to Darfur, and East Chad, Adré through the routes of Portsudan and Also Douala port, Cameroon. This assistance should be in form of providing food, water, shelter, and healthcare. The international community has rather been sluggish and slow in response to this humanitarian calamity. Countries such as the UK, US and France, plus Oxfam, Save the Children should make this case a priority as the scale of the problem is increasing day by day. Martin Griffiths, under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator said “War and hunger threaten to "consume" Sudan where hundreds of thousands of malnourished children are at risk of dying; particularly in Darfur” (ref. 15).
Holding the leaders of RSF accountable for all the crimes against humanity and war crimes they have committed against the civilians of Darfur. This should include Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, Abdelrahim Hamdan Dagalo, Algony Hamdan Dagalo (CFO of the RSF) and Abdelrahman Juma Barak Allah the commander of RSF in West Darfur.
To protect civilians from the Janjaweed militias in Darfur. This can only be achieved by empowering the existing Joint Forces made of peace agreement signees and giving them a clear mandate and also all the means to increase their numbers snd presence in the city.
To give more support to the ICC to continue their new investigations regarding the past and new war crimes in Darfur.
Put pressure on the fighting groups to stop the shelling in civilians areas and also put pressure on the RSF to get out of occupied neighbourhoods in different cities with immediate effect.
The UN Security Council must act now to stop the violence in Darfur. Reactivating Chapter 7 would send a clear message that the international community will not tolerate the continued impunity for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur.

The international community must also provide support to the people of Darfur. The people of Darfur have suffered greatly for many years. They need the international community's help to protect them, rebuild their lives and to ensure that they can live in peace and security.
