President Ken Hackett Visits Darfur as the
Sudan Humanitarian Crisis Continues
CRS President Ken Hackett was the first CEO of a U.S. relief agency to visit Darfur. He traveled to Sudan with several USCCB members to assess humanitarian and security conditions in this region, where more than 1.2 million people are facing insecurity, food shortages, and threats of disease outbreaks. Since his return, Ken has shared his thoughts on the crisis with local, national and international news programs

Ken Hackett and Sudanaid Secretary General Francis Bassin visit with a displaced woman in an informal IDP settlement known as Tonkitir outside of Mershing in South Darfur. Ken remarked that the situation in this camp was as deplorable as any he had seen elsewhere in his travels. Internally displaced people in Tonkitir have only received plastic sheeting and are facing limited access to water and food as well as an inhospitable terrain in the immediate vicinity, which is so barren that cultivation is virtually impossible

Ken Hackett and members of his party (which includes delegates from Caritas, the Nyala Parish and the USCCB) listen to the concerns of IDP leaders in Ummgosen, a displaced settlement near the town of Mershing in South Darfur. These IDPs expressed their sincere gratitude for the construction of 225 huts and three schools, and the donation of water hand pumps and survival kits (made possible through the CI/ACT consortium to which CRS has provided a $100,000 contribution.) They also stated that they remain extremely vulnerable, cannot leave the immediate confines of their settlement, and fear forced returns to their original homes, which were destroyed by the Janjaweed
This photo depicts the cruel reality of life in the Tonkitir camp in the Mershing area of South Darfur. IDPs interviewed stated that, thus far, many people living in Tonkitir have not yet received food aid as registration with the UN is not yet complete. Due to a lack of wood and other locally available building materials, shelters are often basic. Some IDPs complain that sanitation facilities within the camp are inadequate.
The Greatest Humanitarian Crisis Facing The World Today

More than a million lives are endangered as the humanitarian crisis in Sudan worsens. Tens of thousands of people in the Darfur region of Western Sudan have been killed, and more than one million people have been forced from their homes by the violence that has engulfed Western Sudan for more than a year.
Despite tentative peace negotiations and agreed upon ceasefires, there appears little hope that the 198,000 refugees who've crossed the Sudan border into Chad—as well as the estimated 1.2 million internally displaced—will return to their homes in Darfur anytime soon.
The Darfur region is divided into three states—North, West and South—with a population of nearly six million people, one third of whom are expected to need emergency aid by the end of the year. Access to Darfur was largely prohibited until May of 2004. The delayed access, ongoing security issues, and impending rains are making it extremely difficult for the world's humanitarian agencies to provide aid in time to prevent catastrophic loss of life.
With this urgency in mind, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and U.N. Secretary General Koffi Annan traveled to the region to press the Government of Sudan to provide security and access for humanitarian agencies so they may work to save lives. CRS President Ken Hackett is also visiting Sudan as a sign of global solidarity and to encourage greater access for global humanitarian aid.
CRS President Ken Hackett also visited Sudan in early August to assess humanitarian and security conditions in South and West Darfur. He was the first president of a U.S. private voluntary organization to visit Darfur since the crisis began. He traveled with Bishop John Ricard and Father Mike Perry, both of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and visited with high-level Sudanese government and church officials, as well as with internally displaced Sudanese in Ummgosen and Tonkatir camps near Mershing, South Darfur.
Said Hackett, "Security conditions are volatile and inconsistent, endangering any ability for displaced persons to voluntarily return to their villages, as well as aid agencies to effectively respond. We've been told that militia are present near settlements and continue to attack villages and border areas. The result is few safeguards for populations already vulnerable, and unprotected access to basic means for survival."

WHAT:
The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Committee on Conscience hosts a briefing updating the humanitarian situation in Darfur, Sudan, in response to the genocide emergency there. More than one million people have been driven from their homes by government-backed militias, and the humanitarian crisis is becoming increasingly desperate. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) estimates that 350,000 civilians may die in the coming months.
The Committee on Conscience has been closely monitoring the situation in Darfur. In May Committee Staff Director Jerry Fowler visited Sudanese refugee camps in Chad. In July the Committee issued its first ever “Genocide Emergency,” meaning that genocide in Darfur is imminent or actually occurring.

Fidele Lumeya: Advocate, Refugees International. Mr. Lumeya recently returned from the region and will assess on-going operations in Sudan and Chad.

Chad witnesses new Darfur refugee arrivals after two month lull
GENEVA, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- At least 478 new refugees from Sudan's strife-torn Darfur region have arrived in Chad, the first significant number of Sudanese to have crossed the border in about two months, United Nations officials said here Tuesday.
The UN refugee agency UNHCR said it is monitoring the border area to determine whether the recent arrivals were an exception to the two-month absence of refugees crossing the Chad border, or whether they are the first of a possible new wave of Sudanese fleeing to Chad.
The refugees told UNHCR officials in Chad that they had fled their villages having lost confidence in Sudanese officials' assurances over peace and protection, a UNHCR spokeswoman told reporters here.
"Our new head of Sudan operations, Jean-Marie Fakhouri, leaves Chad to return to Darfur today, continuing his mission to assess how we can better help more than 180,000 Darfuri refugees in eastern Chad, as well as many of the estimated 1.2 million Darfuris displaced within Sudan," she said.
In addition to its chronic poverty and the influx of refugees, Chad has now been hit by a locust plague that moved in from West Africa.
The Sudanese government has been accused of backing a force of Arab militia known as the Janjaweed in attacks on African rebel groups in Darfur. Khartoum has strongly denied the accusation.
Darfur has witnessed an 18-month conflict between the Janjaweed and two African rebel groups which has left over 10,000 people dead. The conflict is considered the world's worst current humanitarian crisis by the United Nations.

يجب وقف المأسأة بوقف إقتتال أطراف النزاع رأفة بهؤلاء الطيبين المساكين أطفالا ونسأءا وشيوخا لا ناقة لهم ولا جمل فى هذه الحرب المستعره ..
ويجب أن نفوت الفرصه على كل ذو مطامع فى الوطن الحبيب حتى لا نصبح كأفغانستان أو العراق ..
وأتمنى أن تعى أطراف النزاع الخطر المحدق بالوطن وأن تعلو مصلحة الوطن على المصالح الشخصية ..

نعم كم هو الواقع مرير بدارفور وكم هو مؤلم مشاهده تلك الصور والاشد ايلاما منها رويت هذه المشاهد علي الطبيعة والتفاعل مع الواقع اكثر صدق من التفاعل مع هذه الصور وحتي لو عرضت في متاحف اليهود ولذلك ادعوك لمشاهدتها في ارض دارفور وليس علي شاشة الحاسوب في غرفة مكيفة وان تحتسي الكابتشينو او تتناول المثلجات
فلماذا لا تعود ايها الرفيع لتساهم في دفع هذه الكوارث فدارفور اليوم اشد حوجه الي ابناءها وابناء كل السودانين

لما تحدثنا بين علاقة وثيقة بين حركات التمرد في دارفور وبين اسرائيل لم نكن نغرد خارج السرب ولكن لتاتي انت يا حامض حجر لتؤكد صدق حديثنا فلك الشكر علي هذه الغبائية العالية ...اليهود معروف عنهم الانتهازية ومعادات الاسلام بكل ما اوتو من قوة ومكر وخداع ولا تنسي ان قوله فيهم ( ولن ترضي عنك اليهود ولا النصاري حتي تتبع ملتهم) فلا تتوقع ان يكون رضي اليهود والنصاري عن اطفال دارفور حاملي القران في صدورهم بقدر ما هو تربص وكيد ..امثالك من الادعياء يفرحون بان تعرض صور ابناء واحفاد من كان يكسو الكعبة المشرفة بما وصفهم ربهم بانهم قردة وخنازير ...؟
وانت تفرح وتتمشدق بتلك الصور وتلك الشهادة من الهولكوست اليهودي ؟؟؟
الم يعلم قادة حركات تمردكم الكريم ان هذا ما سيصله مصير ابناء جلدتهم بشن تلك الحرب العنصرية البغيضة ؟؟؟؟

لا شك بأن إخوة لنا تعرضوا في دارفور لفظائع جسيمة وجلهم من الأطفال والنساء والعجزة بغض النظر عن أصل المحنة ومسبباتها فقد دفع الثمن الجميع والحرب لعينة وقاسية ....ولكن أن يتم التسويق لهذه الكارثة في المتاحف الهيودية فهذه متاجرة بقضايا إنسانية وهي مرفوضة بكل المفاهيم
كان الأحري للمعارض اليهودية عرض مجزرة صبرا وشاتيلا وتلك العقوبات الجماعية التى تلحقها بالأسر الفلسطينية وترسل آلاتها الحربية لتهد بها أسقف البنايات على رؤس ساكنيها و تملأ قلوب الأطفال والشياب بالرعب والفزع ....يجب أن يصرخ كل العالم لظلم لحق بدارفور إلا اليهود فليصرخوا بظلمهم لمخيمات الفلسطينين.......

الثابت تاريخيا في بلدنا، البذرفو دموع الدم علي مزابح صبرا او جنين والفلوجة، هم نفسهم مجرمي محرقة التطهير العرقي الان في دارفور ومن قبل في جوبا والجبال.
لذلك لامعني لي اخوتك المدعاة تكلفا ومجاملة هنا.
لو البغتصبو في دارفور كانو اخواتك ده ما كان كلامك بالمرة.
من سخرية الاقدار انو ضحايا محرقة التطهير في دارفور يجدون انفسهم اقرب لليهود منهم لي "اخوتهم" في الدين والوطن افتراضا!
لهذا قاصد ماقاصد احتجاجك هنا متسق تماما مع الخط العام لسياسة دولة اقلية الجلابة، القتلت الملايين باسم الدفاع عن العمق العربي وحماية ظهر مصر ونشر الثقافة العربية كما يدعو محمد عبد القادر سبيل عيانا بيانا في المنبر وخارج المنبر.
وبذلك احتجاجك واعتراضك علي نشر هذه المخازي في متحف الهولكوست، في الواقع ينطلق من ويعبر عن هموم وامال والام العرب والفلسطينين تحديدا وليس "اخوتك" في دارفور مجازا كما تحاول ايهامنا.
فلو لا الغشاوة الاجنبية في رؤيتك مضروبة في الحساسية العالية الناتجة عن صراع ابناء اسحق مع ابناء اخيه اسماعيل، لما كانت هناك مشكلة علي الاطلاق في تقديم ماساة اهلنا في دارفور للعالم عن طريق اليهود.
في الختام الايدو في الموية ماذي الايدو في النار، اوجلدا ما جلدك جر فيهو الشوك.
فموقفك هذا ترف ذهني لن يدفع فاتورته الغلابة والمعذبين في دارفور. فخليك في قضايا "اسلمة المعرفة" بتاعتك افضل!
