This is getting interesting let us summarize
a) Sudan does not use all its current share of the Nile water
b) Potential future expansion in the agricultural land will dictate the use of more water and any increase in water supply is appreciated
c) The canal provides a vital source of extra water which can be used to augment the increase in need water resources.
Now back to the discussion. We should first make use of our current share of the Nile water that flows freely to Egypt. That would provide a significant amount of water resources for any future agricultural expansion that might be needed. Those who are experts in sudan agriculture, will tell us that more than 50% of the agriculture in Sudan is rain fed rather than being irrigated from the Nile (Just check the agricultural production from Gaddarif etc). This also sheds light on why we have lots of famines as our food production is rain dependent to a great extent. In this line of thought any future agricultural expansion can be irrigated from our current share of the Nile. If I remember right 80% of the Nile water is provided by the blue Nile rather than coming from the south. So whatever we are gonna get from the canal does not even come close to what the blue nile can provide.
So the arguement of providing more water resources is weak. We already the extra water alas we are not using it.
Like it or not the drying of the swamp areas will eventually lead to land degradation and through time these areas are turning to be less habitable to various forms of life where we can really find other sources of water without damaging the local environment in the south. A clear example happened in the 80s in Iraq. Saddam Hussien regime dried the marshlands in the south and cuttoff the river flow there which evetually now turned that area to semi-arid status irrespective of the rain fall there. Remember this area is called the fertile cresent!! Another point, which is also of great importance is that the river flow through the swamps lead to natural water purification where the water drops all its sediments (which can be hazardous) in the swamp areas. Without this significant pollutants will flow freely northwards. With our lousy water purification system imagine the catastrophic disaster. I am not a very knowledgable person, but I am sure that an environmentalist will be able to give a better assessment of the impact.
Egypt ONLY looks for its interest. They do not give a s h i t what impact of the canal to us. All what they care about is more water more and more and more. So Deng is right in his concerns
