This is not an easy question to answer for westerners in general
Allah does not have a place where one can go and
knock on the door and then find him. Believing in the unseen is a key here
.
Anyway, here are few points that you can convey to your friend for starting
an interesting discussion on the subject:
1)(
His (Allah) creations are the greatest symbol of his existance. Most of these creations be it the humans or the universe are the result of a great creator
They exist in a fine norm of organization and beauty that nothing but a great
creator would have been able to do that. All basic science works on trying to
discover the laws governing these creators and/or how they come to exist.
2((
Life from the islamic perespective is merely a grand big place where humans are
expected to adhere to a specific norms where later they will be rewarded for in a
life still to come. Consequently, they will also be punished should they go astray.
So in a nutshell, it is a big test. To perform this test, good and evil must exist
as well for human to be able to choose which one they decide to follow. Of course
our religion, Islam, provides for us many ways through which we should avoid
doing evil deeds and sticking to the good deeds so that at the end we will be able
to make it safely and avoid the punishment of Allah.
Allah is not evil but rather created it to be able to test who follows the evil
from those who follow the good. Being able to discipline yourself and maintain
a high norm of life is one way of avoiding evil and following the good.
3)
Those who can neither contribute positively to the question at hand nor able to provide an intellectual negative insight are better off shutting up. Much better than belittling others
