In isolation Cdr. Arman’s statements may seem “just” unfortunate, possibly the product of improvisation rather than deep thought. The attention they drew could all be a case of “contradicting an opinion when what is uncongenial is really the tone in which it was conveyed” as Nietzsche put it

However, I think Cdr. Arman’s statements do provide the opportunity to seek political clarity about current events, particularly if they are associated with other statements made by Dr. Garang, Dr. Mansour Khalid, Cdr. Al Helluo, and a few others from the SPLM in Khartoum

Peace per the Naivasha Accords is most welcome. It came at very high cost for the combatants and the country as a whole. War and its ability to mobilize our inhumanity should not be revisited and this is precisely why we must all work toward broadening the support for the agreement and all the political processes that will sustain it, i.e., democracy. The Accords and now the constitutional process were/are shrouded in secrecy and this has its own political cost

I think we can all agree that change will occur incrementally over time provided we develop the right mix of support for the good and opposition to the dysfunctional aspects of the process. The transition is not about a perfect democracy and does include many improvisations that may seem to feed the totalitarian ambitions/impulses of the Ingaz. No one is expecting miracles or very smooth sailing. No one should expect the SPLM to do the political bidding of all those opposing the Ingaz. However, I think it will be to the advantage of the SPLM to escape the “totalitarian trap” of its partner. It could do so in a clear discourse on the pivotal issues before us. This I believe is the only way to build support and trust, particularly among a constituency estranged by the political process. I realize that this is a tall-order that requires delicate design. I also encourage the SPLM not to assume that support for the peace process and subsequent political changes the equivalent of support for the SPLM’s agenda – real or imagined, particularly as it too goes through its own transformation

Empowering civil society, to moderate and articulate social debate in a balanced manner independent of very sever partisanship can not be done without a commensurate investment in basic freedoms. If for any reason the SPLM fails to grasp the sincerity and/or necessity of this, it is incumbent on all those aggrieved to protest and voice their concerns as well as work toward achieving this goal, particularly since we are no where near full peace and/or democracy in the Sudan

Thank you for your input. I think the best way to avoid disappointment in others is to do our part and remain engaged until democracy and peace are achieved – I am assuming that these are your ultimate goals too
