Dubai: The UAE does not recognise May Day and has no plans to do so, labour officials said. Yesterday was May Day, the traditional workers' holiday around the world. A senior Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs official did not know it was May Day.
Humaid Bin Deemas, assistant undersecretary of administration and finance, said the country had enough holidays. "No, it won't be a holiday. There's no plan for it to be a holiday.
"According to the Labour Law, it's not a holiday."
Bin Deemas said he did not intend to be disrespectful, but the UAE had enough holidays. "We have too many religious holidays already, even the private sector has many holidays. I don't think it's necessary to have another one."
