    Garjah ya zameel al tofoula wal shabab.

    ya rafeeg al madaris wal madarik.

    from your knowledge i learned my trade. from your talents i sharpened my pencil. we shared al nabag wal gonglaiz wa bidayat al tasawul.

    we shared loyalty to our working class background and commitment to the role of educated people in giving back to Sudan some of her Favours.

    we went to the same primary school where the son of the education minister, who believed in free eduaction to all children, was our colleague. in this same school we learnt how hens lay eggs. and how earth give birth to vegetables. hissat al filaha!

    in this same school we joined the society of drama and music, the society of journalism, and delivered ustaz Mustafa's love letters to Sit Layla in the neighboring girls school where Sit Ashmana was the head teacher/nazra and one of the few women who drove a Morris car! at that time.

    in this same school the sandwiches of Jamiya and Dahaba nourished our bodies and our souls. halawa gotton and halawa gasab and gorrasat nabag were our tahlia!

    Those were the days when the purpose of education was to help create rounded persons and personalities irrespect of the pupil's social or economic circumstances. Was it socialism? may be.

    Do you remember the annual festival at the end of school year organised by the Teachers and Parents councils? when proud mothers and fathers would come to the school to see by their own eyes their children sing and dance and recite poetry and play music and sports and present programmes and make public speeches?

    Do you remember al aswag al khayriya? wal jarayid al hayitiya? and al buroush we bought for the islamic education society?
    and the quarels in the break/fos7a in front of al mazyara?

    those were the days ya garjah. i ask you to write something in arabic about them. i hope i will be able to use an arabic keyboard soon.

    Tumadir and Cola thank you for your kind words. by being a member of this board of knowledge and humour i learn every minute from you and enjoy your company fi haza al shatat!
