(Cairo, July10, 2004)"The ban placed on the Sudanese website "sudaneseonline.com" is a clear violation to the freedom of expression and a backslide to the right to circulate information", The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (HRINFO) said today. According to the information reported to HRINFO by Bakry Abo Bakr, the Sudanese National Authority for Communications has banned the website in Sudan on the 7th of July 2004. Inquiring from an official with the Communications Authority, Bakr was informed that the ban was placed upon a decision by the Sudan's Internal Security Apparatus. "The ban placed on "Sudaneseonlilne.com" is considered an episode in the series of violations committed by the Sudanese government against its citizens, and a deny of the political outlet promised by the Sudanese Authorities" Said Gamal Eid, the executive director of HRINFO.
"On the base of article 19 in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which safeguards everyone's right to seek, receive and impart information and ideas, the Sudanese authorities must immediately lift the ban from Sudaneseonline website. Sudan should remain aloof from being included in the list of the enemies of freedom states" HRINFO said.
