HIV/AIDS Short-Course AZT Testing in Zimbabwe (1994-1998) [edit]
AZT trials conducted on HIV-positive African subjects by U.S. physicians and the University of Zimbabwe were not performed with proper informed consent.[4] The United States began testing AZT treatments in Africa in 1994, through projects funded by Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It included testing of over 17,000 women for a medication that prevents mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS. The subjects did not fully understand the testing methods, the effectiveness, the possible dangers, or the nature of a placebo in testing situations.[4] They were also told about the trials under duress.[4] Half of these women received a placebo that has no effect, which means that transmission was likely. As a result, an estimated 1000 babies contracted HIV/AIDS although a proven life-saving regimen already existed.[4] The CDC ended the short course testing in 1998 after they announced they had enough information from Thailand trials.[ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_experimentation_in_Africa

Secretary Donna Shalala Department of Health and Human Services 200 Independence Ave, SW Washington, D.C. 20201
Dear Secretary Shalala:
Unless you act now, as many as 1,002 newborn infants in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean will die from unnecessary HIV infections they will contract from their HIV-infected mothers in nine unethical research experiments funded by your Department through either the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). http://www.citizen.org/Page.aspx?pid=2329 http://www.wfsj.org/news/news.php?id=258
In 1997, it alleged that, as a result of some experiments funded by the US Government, 1,000 children had died unnecessarily from Aids.
It questioned the reason for some trials which it said had failed to come up with new findings. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/803138.stm
