    THE MOTHER BULL
    ========================
    A play in one act
Based on a Sudanese Folk tale

    ================================

By Yahya Fadlalla and Gary Santucci
    =======================================

    OPENING SCENE: DOG NARRATION
((Ambient sounds of forest, drumming and music can be heard. the dog enters through the audience to the stage ))

“I have heard it told that there once was a lion and a hyena, who each owned several head of cattle. The lion mismanaged his wealth, devouring his cattle until all that remained was a bull.

The hyena, on the other hand, was a careful steward of his herd. His cattle grew in numbers and the birth of one particularly beautiful heifer caught the lion’s attention. Upon seeing the hyena’s success, the lion became envious and devised a plan to steal away the young heifer. He planned not only to seize the heifer but also conspired to justify his actions. So to that end he called upon all of the animals of the forest to attend a very urgent meeting to set his plan in motion.

All of the animals came to the meeting as much out of their fear of the lion as for their curiosity. The lion immediately began to denounce the hyena. “All of you gathered here today must know that the hyena has committed a great offence against me. He has stolen a young heifer that my bull had given birth to!” Everybody was shocked and stunned by the charge. A bull giving birth to a heifer, how could this be? Yet who would challenge the lion? Who would risk a bad ending by even doubting such a strange story? Just at that moment when everyone was tongue-tied and terror-stricken, a rabbit passed by in a hurry, carrying a jar of water.

The rabbit was well aware of what was happening and kept going as he felt that the situation did not concern him anyway. The lion seeing that the rabbit had no intention of joining the meeting shouted “What are you going to do with that water?” The rabbit stopped but kept his distance and replied. “My father just gave birth to a baby brother and the baby needs a bath!” The lion, without thinking, shouted, “It is impossible for your father to give birth to a child!” The rabbit seeing his opportunity quickly responds, “It is as possible as a bull giving birth to a heifer!” Realizing that his lie had been exposed, the lion roared with false bravado, withdrew his charge against the hyena and ended the meeting.”

Dog continues; “Well this is just a story ……..

By the way I’m not from this forest, I’m an outsider. I was a domestic animal for many years just as dogs have always been. Things have now changed I have run away from my master’s home. I am now a homeless dog from a small village in Africa, somewhere in Africa. The name or location of the village really doesn’t matter as now a days all places in Africa have the same problems.

I have a strange name. I really don’t understand why the people of the village gave me this name. I’m not ashamed of it nor am I proud of it either. My name is Kojonka.

I am a different kind of dog. I don’t want to live with humans. Something inside of me is pushing me to be a dog for myself not a dog that belongs to a man or a woman. I need to smell my freedom and experience life without humans. If possible I want to return to a life in the wild.

I have arrived in this forest to see if I can fit in here. I know nothing about this forest and the animals that live here but I will try. Kojonka will always try! Kojonka is a dog of challenges.”

Kojonka continues on into the moonlit forest. Playful drumming can be heard in the distance. He arrives at a clearing in the forest where several animals are sitting, relaxing and chatting. Suddenly the drums become more menacing. The light becomes more intense and the moonlight disappears. A fox enters pushing a large wide TV screen right into their midst. They all scatter about confused and fearful. The drums grow in intensity then begin to fade along with the lights. There is a brief moment of silence. The drums return with even more intensity. The animals remain in a confused state. The lights fade to black and come up quickly on the TV screen. The Lion roars and appears on the TV, then all is silent in anticipation of what the Lion is about to say.

Lion: Listen all of you, wherever you may be! I have taken this extraordinary step to lodge a complaint against the Hyena. Yes everyone, the Hyena. The Hyena, has stolen my calf, a young heifer that my bull had given birth to. The Hyena must be brought to justice and I expect your cooperation in punishing this criminal.

Fox: We will be right back with more developments in this breaking story.

Lights fade; the Fox pushes the TV screen off stage.

Zebra: This is absurd! It was the Lion himself who ate all of his cattle until all that remained was the bull! Now he wants to change the laws of nature.

Monkey: Yes, a bull that gave birth to a calf, a mother bull. Now our lives hang in the balance, under the hoof of that mother bull.
Kojonka: I have seen this behaviour before when I lived with humans. This is not the way of animals. It is human behaviour.

Monkey: The forest is changing. It is not the home I have known all of my life. It is becoming a jungle, a place of power struggles and survival. I’ll run away, make a new life for myself.

Deer: You said that he ate all of his cattle. Now what have our lives come to, to eat or to be eaten?

Rabbit: Yes what is happening? Where are all of the other animals, the camels, the sheep, the giraffes and the birds where have they gone? Are they dead or alive? Have they fled the forest? If only the Lion had eaten that bull, we would not be here today shaking with fear with no hope for the future.

The lights fade; menacing war drums grow in intensity. The TV screen is placed on centre stage. The lion appears; roars then disappears. The Fox then appears on screen.

Fox: Good evening everyone. I have a very important announcement, but first let’s check on the weather. For those of you who live in the desert, it will be hot and dry today with a low probability of precipitation and for our friends who live in the jungle you can expect the weather to be hot and steamy for the foreseeable future. Now back to our lead story…………

“Our beloved great leader, the Lion has declared, in the name of God, a war against the savage outsider (everyone looks at the dog with fear) you all know him. He has stolen from us! He is ambitious. He wants to seize power and destroy our land! The Hyena must be defeated! (The animals no longer fear Kojonka). This is a war for peace and freedom! It is a war to rebuild our democratic animal republic. It is a war for our rights, a war against violence and dictatorship!

The Lion appears on screen, roaring. The lights fade to a spotlight on the rabbit as if it were moonlight.

Rabbit: How can we live like this? We can only expect more and more bad news. One minute the Hyena is our friend and neighbour. The next minute he is an outsider and our enemy.

Kojonka approaches the Rabbit and starts a conversation.

    Kojonka: Hello Rabbit.

    Rabbit: Hi

Kojonka: It seems to me Rabbit that you are going to have to find a way out of this mess.

    Rabbit: A way out

Kojonka: Yes Rabbit a way out, a solution to the conflict.

Rabbit: The more I think about this absurd conflict the less I see, of what you would call a way out.

Kojonka: Don’t give up. There is always a way.

Rabbit: Listen to me! It’s impossible. I’m just a small animal. I’m alone, alone without any power, without any means to find a way out. If I confront the Lion, I will become his next meal. If only I could outsmart him in someway.

Kojonka: Rabbit now you are starting to get on the right track. Find the means to outsmart him. That’s the key.

Rabbit: You think it’s that easy Dog? You’re an outsider, not part of this conflict. You can just leave and be on your way.

    Kojonka: Rabbit keep thinking

Rabbit: What’s to think about? We all know that males cannot give birth. The laws of nature cannot be changed just because somebody says so. How can we say it? How can we expose the Lion’s lies without bringing ruin on our selves?

Kojonka: Males cannot give birth. You are right. This is a fact that does not have to be proven. Find the way to say it without directly challenging the Lion. Find the way to say it without really saying it. Good-bye for now. Take care of yourself.

Kojonka leaves. The Rabbit is left alone on stage in the moonlight muttering to himself

Rabbit: Say it without really saying it….. say it without really saying it……say it without really saying it…..

The lights fade to black. The Fox returns to centre stage with the TV screen. The lights come up.

Fox: Welcome back everyone to our in depth coverage of our national crisis. We have just received the results of our latest public opinion polls. Our beloved leader has received the overwhelming support of all of the animals in his heroic struggle against the forces that would destroy the very heart and soul of our country. Now let’s get some reaction from our viewing audience. Hello monkey. What is your opinion of the Hyena resistance movement
Monkey: I think that this movement is a bad way to solve the problem. I think that doing nasty things to get back at someone will never solve any problem. I think…

    The Fox interrupts the Monkey.

Fox: Where do really stand now

Monkey: Of course I support our beloved leader with all of my heart against Hyena terrorists. I pledge my unconditional support to him.

    Fox: Thank you Monkey.

The Rabbit is quietly watching in the distance and is becoming quite disturbed at what he is seeing. The Fox continues with the interviews. The Zebra and Deer appear on the screen.

Fox: Hello Zebra, what do you think about the issue

    Zebra: What issue

Fox: (annoyed the Fox insists) Zebra what is your opinion of our beloved leader’s war against the Hyena Resistance Movement, the HRM

Zebra: Is there anyway for the Hyena to return the calf that the Lion’s bull gave birth to and stop the war

Fox: Deer what do you think about the war against the Hyena

Deer: Our great leader is right of course. He is fighting for our peace. He is building a multicultural forest.

Fox: (the Fox is even more annoyed) What do you mean, a multicultural forest

Deer: (the deer begins to stammer) Yes, no…I mean….. that

The Rabbit cannot restrain himself any longer. He pounds his walking stick on the ground and shouts)

    Rabbit: Enough

Fox: (startled, the Fox shouts back) Rabbit!

Rabbit: (to himself) What have I done? I better leave before I end up in a bad way. No! I belong here. The forest is my home.

Fox: (Fox insisting) Rabbit can I talk with you? Do you have something to say to our viewing audience
Rabbit: No! I have nothing to say! (he then recalls his conversation with Kojonka) Say it without really saying it…… I will stand up for my rights and for the freedom to be what I wish to be.

Fox: Come here Rabbit. You are busy, I see

The Rabbit is carrying a jar of water.

Rabbit: Yes I am busy. I’m bringing water from the river to my home.

Fox: (with sarcasm in his voice) And what do you need the water for

Rabbit: (answering in a calm voice) My father gave birth yesterday, to my baby brother. He needs a bath.

Fox: (with anger shouting) How can your father give birth when he is male
Rabbit: (in a loud confident voice) How is it that the great leader’s bull gave birth to a heifer? Is his bull a female

The war drums immediately come up loudly. The Lion roars. Everyone is fearful and trembling. Suddenly the Lion jumps through the TV Screen. There is an intense struggle. The Lion captures the Deer and the Zebra and takes them away.

Lights fade to a spotlight on the Rabbit. There is silence.

Rabbit: The Deer, the Zebra, who is next? To eat or to be eaten. Is that the only question now

The spotlight fades. The drums begin. The lights come up. The remaining animals are huddled together on stage. The Fox enters pushing the TV screen. The animals scatter once again.

Fox: Good evening everyone. It has been another great day in our forest. The war against the HRM is gaining ground everyday with every strategic move by our beloved leader. The greatest minds of our country have now joined in the struggle for our freedom. Let’s talk to one of them now. Welcome Dr. Tiger. First of all let me thank you for taking the time away from your important research.

Dr. Tiger: It is my pleasure to be here with you and your viewers.

Fox: I understand that this research was undertaken at the request of our beloved leader.

Dr. Tiger: Yes it was. There were many misconceptions about many things. I have set out to clarify them through scientific investigation and arrive at the truth.

Fox: Dr. Tiger could you share your findings with our audience.

Dr. Tiger: After carrying out exhaustive tests, cross checking the results with our team of scientists, I can categorically without a doubt tell you that it is possible for males to give birth!

Fox: There you have it everyone! Males can give birth. Long live our beloved leader. May he be victorious in the war against the HRM.

The lion roars mixed with war drums. The lights fade and Kojonka laughs hysterically.
