JUBA (Jan 17, 2010) – The SPLM on Sunday revealed names of individuals the party has picked to compete in gubernatorial elections up and down the country, ending days of speculation over nominations for the positions.
SPLM Secretary General Pagan Amum publicized the nominations at a news conference in Juba, just hours after the Political Bureau completed the process of vetting proposed names and chose its most favorite candidates to stand for the positions of governors.
“The SPLM is contesting in all states of the Sudan,” Comrade Amum told reporters.
He said that the process of selecting candidates to compete in Sudan’s 25 states and the Abyei Administrative Area was a “serious” one, adding that competition was “stiff.”
Said Amum:“We have a serious problem. We have too many leaders; capable leaders.”
The Secretary General explained that members of the Political Bureau Bureau picked the candidates by voting in secret ballots.
“In this process, a number of our leaders lost, including members of the Political Bureau,” he pointed out.
Political Bureau members Cdes Daniet Awet Akot, governor of Lakes State and Mark Nyipouch, governor of Western Bahr Ghazal State, are not among the party’s nominees to contest the gubernatorial elections.
Two other sitting SPLM governors, the governors of Warrap State and Eastern Equatoria State, were also left out of the nominations.
The Political Bureau chose Cde Deng Arop Kuol as its candidate for the position of Administrator for the Abyei Administrative Area.
“We have renewed 50 percent of our leaders at the state level,” Cde Amum pointed out, referring to the Bureau’s nominations that brought in a couple of new faces.
The SPLM, in line with its objective of increasing the number of women in politics, has opted to field four women, two in the North and two in the South, to contest the gubernatorial elections.
“We will work to ensure that these candidates… will win,” Cde Pagan promised.
The Secretary General said he expected all party members, including those who lost, to support the SPLM’s candidates for the various positions.
“All of them (the candidates) are going to receive the backing and support of all members,” said Cde Amum.
Later on Sunday, the Political Bureau met to vet out and consider nominations of aspirants for the National Assembly, South Sudan Legislative Assembly and the state legislative assemblies.
The process was expected to be completed on Monday.
