Emirates Post makes a bid for a Guinness world record by creating world's largest portrait from postage stamps
The 4 m x 6 m portrait pays tribute to HH the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan
Dubai, July 6, 2005: Emirates Post today unveiled the world's largest portrait made from postage stamps. The 4m x 6 m portrait, made from 77,000 UAE postage stamps from 750 issues since the formation of the UAE federation, will be submitted to the Guinness World Records.
The portrait was unveiled at a special ceremony attended by HH Sultan Saeed Al Mansoori, Minister of Communications and Chairman of Emirates Post, HH Sheikha Lubna Al Qassimi, UAE Minister for Finance & Planning, H.E. Lt. Gen. Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, Commandant General of Dubai Police and Mr. Abdullah Ibrahim Al Daboos, Director General, Emirates Post.
As per Guinness requirements, the portrait's technical specifications were authenticated by Mr. Mohammed Kazem, deputy manager, Emirates Artists Union and Mr. Khalil Abdul Wahid, activities supervisor, Emirates Artists Union.
Also present were several dignitaries from government and private companies as well as members of the local and international media.
In his message, HH Sultan Saeed Al Mansoori said: "We expressed our sorrow over the death of HH Sheikh Zayed through prayers and poems. We still cannot stop talking about him. We find no words to describe his generosity. Sheikh Zayed was the man of the people and he demonstrated this in thought and deeds. He was a man of wisdom and humanitarianism and a man of principle. This portrait is a big Thank You gesture from the people of the UAE."
HH Sheikha Lubna commented: "HH Sheikh Zayed was like a knight who leaves behind tears due to dust as he rides by. He was a man with a big heart and his actions touched the hearts and minds of all people. His name will remain in our memory forever. This unique portrait of stamps is an excellent tribute to such a great leader from the people of the UAE."
Lt. Gen. Dhahi Khalfan Tamim said: "HH Sheikh Zayed laid the foundation of this country. We owe to him the great standing and respect UAE enjoys in the world today. He succeeded in taking the country to new heights within a short period of time. It is no surprise that people remember him through projects like this portrait of stamps that Emirates Post has created as a historic tribute to his greatness."
Addressing the invitees at the Dubai Police Officers' Club, Mr. Abdullah Al Daboos, Director General of Emirates Post, said: "I am delighted to announce that Emirates Post is set to gain an entry into the Guinness Book of World Records by creating the world's biggest portrait exclusively from UAE stamps. We are proud to announce that this will be the first entry in the Guinness Book featuring a 'portrait' made from postage stamps."
"We could not find a bigger personality than HH Sheikh Zayed to implement the project. The whole world has acknowledged the greatness of HH Sheikh Zayed and the entire world community mourns his death. He was the key figure behind the formation of the United Arab Emirates, and it is his vision that has put the UAE on the road to great progress and development," said Mr. Al Daboos.
The ambitious project was developed and implemented by Omer Abdul Khaleg of Emirates Post, in coordination with Hussain Sharif and Abdulrahim Salem, two National artists from Emirates Artists Union, under the supervision of an Emirates Post team consisting of Mohammed bin Towaih, Sultan Mahmoud and Shaikha
