Many thanks to you and El Mahasy!
Allow me to agree with the general direction of your comment and to disagree with how you arrived there!
One: Sudan is a fragile country torn by conflict and very weak social formations. Political parties on their own can never rescue it or develop it (false expectation). What is needed is a vibrant independent civil society that can moderate and develop social agendas for change. None of these (agendas) will be forthcoming in the absence of basic freedoms and the rule of law.
Two: Political parties can not institute social change on their own. They need activist grassroots mechanisms to affect their agendas. Contrary to your assertions – they did meet and agree on a common platform – they NDA program. However, the best political program in the world is meaningless in the absence activism, discipline, and coherence! The road to Machakos could have been altered if all political civil society forces actually performed their part!
Three: Machakos is not an NDA process, it is a bilateral one involving the combatants. One of its greatest problems is its failure to sustain a solution reflecting the comprehensive nature of the Sudanese crises. It is also the culmination of many errors within the NDA – specifically its political posture and tactics! Coordination will not be agreed to until those absent can show why they should be listened to – this was the message from the Sponsors African/European/ American, the Ingaz, and implicitly the SPLM.
Four: The Machakos process can not deliver a solution on our behalf or at least those who are neither represented by the NC or the SPLM. The events in Darfur are a sample of things to come if Some aggrieved Sudanese see how military strength can be leveraged politically! The outcome will be the complete disintegration of the Sudan (new/old Arab/African …etc).
Five: Those not represented by the process must find their own way to achieving their goals. None of the new initiatives have developed into viable political processes that can lead to a stable democracy! Our options here are limited to intensifying our civil resistance to the Ingaz and any group that elects to stand by their side! One step that would have a disastrous impact is to court this regime as a counter weight to Machakos. This will only allow it to play all sides against the Center!
Six: Any strategy that seeks to empower the grassroots requires the greatest degrees of coordination and involvement of those with interest in the outcome! This remains the key to
change!
