Political Polarization and Community Service: Walking the Fine Line
I read with both interest and amusement this message (Bian) that brought to mind eternal and at times surreal scattered Questions that might prove useful to ponder (brainstorm) very calmly respectfully, and without any predisposed ideas or a rush to judgment
These question center around the challenges that faces each and every attempt at community service within our Sudanese in general, whether here or any other part of the world. I will attempt to shed light on some of these scattered issues as they spring to mind for your consideration (pls excure the length of this message. I just could not cut it short):
1. Striking the delicate balance:
How can any community organization, be it sacdo or any other, strike the delicate balance between; its main mission of bringing together diverse sections of our community under one umbrella to serve the "common good" (if there is indeed an agreement on one), on the one hand, and at the same time tackle or reflect political issues of concern, without fear of risking the emergence of political divisive polarization that tend to historically erode every effort at community service?
2. Passiveness or/ and indifference
Faced by this dilemma,would it be wise of the executive Committee (EC) to completely neglect tackling or at least showing concern, say out of fear of being labeled as being part of this or that camp or fearing polarization? Simply put, will being passive and/or indifferent a guarantee for "success", and the blessings of all ?
Will keeping a low profile from critical political issues, that is believed to have traditionally tended to polarize us, a guarantee to keep the community united?
3.Lessons Learned:
Can we tap on our diverse historical experiences at community service, openly and with a critical eye, and try to identify the reasons/factors for their success and/or failures and really start to to learn a thing or two?
History has shown us all and repeatedly the erosion of so many attempts at community work, because of their inevitable politicization, but like wise they ahve shown that any lack of transparancy (Shafafia) can equally lead to the same result.
OK this will lead us to ask further:
4. How can we all prevent the politicization of the community organization:
While it is understandably legitimate for every person to be allowed to simply (be), it would be fair to conclude that it is very unfair to drag members of our community into political vendettas that are taking place, behind the scenes.
How can any community organization really focus on serving the community, whose members really do not want to be a part to any behind the scene politics, but just expect to be genuinely served.
Still, how can the EC also show more transparency and explain to its voters what is really taking place that they might not know about?
5. Transperancy
I am sure many people have their own opinions of this EC and its work and activities, but there is an interesting sentiment expressed by a lady I heard say after returning from the Sunday Eid celebration with her family and after reading the Statement distributed and said with frustration:
خلاص.... عايزين يقوموا عليها يكسروها " ؟"
This is all very preplexing indeed ! Is there anything happening that this lady or many others do not know about ?
6. What is the True Measure for Success?
It would be reasonable to conclude that the true measure of success of any community organization, regardless, is the degree of its inclusiveness and transperancy. The ability to bring on board if not all, most sections that make up our interesting rich, yet extremely challenging heterogeneous mix. And more transperancy.
7. Realistic Expectations from any community organization:
Its certainly impossible to satisfy all, its naive to expect that, but it does make sense for community organizations to strive with all sincerity to allow for the representation of most of us here. We are not all Muslims, neither are we all Arabs, and we certainly are not all Men.
Adopting a broad vision and implementing it and leading by example is the only way out for all of us.
8. A Virtual move ....towards the New Sudan?
If we can do the above (towards true inclusiveness) , I think we can illustrate the possibility... just the possibility of moving a little bit forward towards a new Sudan...where differences in opinions and political stands are respected, and where decency and accommodation, in reflecting these views, are the norm, and where every single effort at serving others ,regardless of any political differences or affiliations or even blunders, should be appreciated.
