Dear Mansour,
Salam,
I have been following your writings in SudaneseOnline Discussion Board
with interest, while sitting on the fence by trying to be neutral.
The article by Dr. Abdelsalam, sadly and unfortunately, missed the
point by attributing the desertification in the Sudan to the
mechanised farming in Nuba Mountains and Southern Gazira; this
argument reminded me of the infamous Dictator General Numeri when he
blamed the shortage of Sugar in Sudan during the early 1980's to the
women using sugar to make a sticky paste to remove undesired skin hair
(Halawa).
These arguments are not new and have been around for sometime now; and
are always presented by the Western Politicians to counter the fact
that the West and especially the USA are the major atmospheric
polluters and they are responsible for the climatic disasters (by
producing and releasing massive Green House Gases to the atmosphere).
The first time I came to know of this argument was in 1990 in
Manchester UK, during a brainstorm workshop which was convened to
formulate The UK Climate Policy for Rio Climate Conference held in
1992. An Ecology Professor (could not reacl his name now) presented
this arguments and I was one of the delegates who stood up to him and
fiercely contested and disputed all of his findings (I am not an
Ecologist, but a mere African farmer who knows the facts on the
ground).
I will present some of the facts regarding the Mechanised Farming in
Sudan:
a) All large scale mechanised farms are allocated lands that are not
densely forested, as the Rooting out of the BUSHES is a very expensive
process for this requires the removal of the roots to allow the
ploughing of the land. Notice I said bushes not trees. Trees are not
allowed to be removed, and the trees that are usually found in these
land are the Laloob (sorry I do not know the scientific name of
Laloob) which grows sparsely. Some rows of bushes are left by the
farmer as protection belts.
b) Talih and Darote trees grow in land that is not fertile and hence
not a desired farming land.
c) Non of the removed bushes are used in making charcoal because
charcoal is made of different kind of trees, and Charcoal makers are
not farmers.
Finally I would like to apologize for Gate crashing you space,
but for the good of Sudan I am sure you would not mind. I hope I am
not being a irritant.
If you are interest to know more about my farming experience, I would
only
be happy to tell you about my most difficult but still happiest times
of my life.
