Eventually, I found out that it could only win you sympathy and self-gratification -if you happen to live abroad, but if you lived in Sudan, the result could be jail, torture, job-loss and vagabondage. The NIFers, to maintain their grip on power they have not only killed and tortured their opponents, but also sodomized some of them to destroy their dignity, and, morally incapacitate them from challenging their tyranny. Corporal punishment is a weapon of choice for the NIF to subdue civil disobedience, humiliate activists, and break the spirit of a nation. Decent women, who marched peacefully to meet the UN Human Rights rapporteur in Khartoum, the NIF security beat them and dragged them on the street, and a judge sentenced them to 30 lashes on their buttocks. Seven years of the so-called civil struggle (jihad madani) brought al-Sadiq al- Mahdi nothing, but jail and parades of humiliation on TV. His continuous calls for negotiations with the NIF were met by ridicule. So why they want to negotiate now? What in hell made them change their minds? Is it any thing other than war? Their army is not defeated yet, but war has compromised the NIF and the whole World have the pleasure of seeing them as they really are, not what they pretend to be –they are not men of war. They are staying in Khartoum (licking the honey) and forcing children to fight for them. This has become their real problem now. They cannot explain or justify their cowardice that is why they want peace. Exactly this time last year, Ghazi Salah al-din declared that he was going to lead a battalion to the South. Nurralddin Mannan wrote a message saying, “ gadeema ya Ghazi.” It turned out to be really (gadeema) Ghazi stayed home. No one has ever talked a dictator out of office; people who rule by power can only be removed by power. Don’t tell me about Ghandi; I think that most Sudanese do not believe in torturing themselves to break the hearts of their oppressors. If the NIF want to reconcile with people who have different ideas from theirs, why they do not make peace negotiations with Bona Malwal, Frances Deng or Kilemto Amboro? Simply my friend, those great patriotic men are not combatants and have no armies on the ground, they only use reason and logic to address the suffering of their people. If Ghadafi believes in negotiation to settle political differences he should start at home and invite the Libyan opposition to talk about the fate of his country. Not long ago he sent professional assassins around Europe to liquidate his opponents. Al-Kikha was kidnapped from his apartment in Cairo. A policewoman had been killed by a random fire when security thugs in the Libyan Embassy in London open fire through the window on a peaceful demonstration by Libyan exiles. Ghadafi gives his own assurances to the Sudanese opposition saying that he guarantees their safety if they return to Sudan. Ironical, the guy doesn’t trust the NIFers with his own personal safety, he sent 450 bodyguards to Khartoum before his arrival. Why Ghadafi suddenly became concerned about the well being of the Sudanese people? A few years ago, he deported thousands of them from his country, not by air or in a humane manner --he literally threw them in the desert. Idealism has no place in real life. We live in a World that believes in power and recognizes only the strong. On November 1995, we had a conference here in Ottawa to discuss the problems of the Horn of Africa. The Honorable Fatima Ahmed Ibrahim asked the representative of the Friends of IGAD, “ why those countries are refusing to include the northern political parties in the peace process?” The representative answered, “the northern politicians are only criticizing the Government,” meaning that: you guys are not fighting, you are just talking, and talk is cheap. Here in Canada I have seen the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader, well received and revered by the media and the political establishment. The upper social class threw lavish receptions in his honor and listen attentively to his ancient wisdom. Top Canadian universities bestowed upon him honorary degrees. A few months later arrived the Chinese dictator and Canada signed with him the real business deals. The Chinese brutal occupation of Tibet was not mentioned. The whole business with the Dali Lama was a circus. So long as China is a lucrative market for Western technology, this wise man can only dream about his country. Criticizing war will not bring peace, only justice will. I believe you and many other Sudanese are sincere in their call for peaceful solution. But obviously most calls for peace are lopsided; they do not condemn the NIF continuous oppression to the defenseless people of Sudan. They criticize the bombing of an oil pipeline, which resulted in no human casualty, but they keep silent about relentless and deliberate air bombardment to a civilian hospital in Yai and indiscriminate bombing to displaced people’s camps in the South. Unfortunately, some people want to live oblivious to the agony of our people in Sudan after they managed to rescue themselves and their children from the NIF'’ Civilizational Hurricane. Self-absorbency is rampant among educated Sudanese, some have served the NIF for many years, and they are here because the NIF no longer needs their service. I have no quarrel with these people, and none of us has the right to judge the other; they should live their life and let me do my thing. Why can’t we learn from other police states, where dictators retained security apparatuses as ruling parties? When political opponents of Norreiga returned to Panama to run the election under the auspices of the UN, every time those politicians went out on the stump, Norreiga security thugs beat them. Eventually the U.S. army had to go there to restore democracy. The people of East Timor believed in the UN credibility; dropped their weapons and waited for the referendum. When the people voted, the militia went in a rampage killing and burning thousands of civilians. Australian soldiers went to rescue East Timor; U.S. soldiers went to rescue Panama, Bosnia, Kuwait, and Kosovo. If the NDA made a deal and went to Khartoum, while the NIF retaining their security thugs and militia, a similar episode would definitely take place. Then not the Americans or the Australians would come to restore order --it would be the Egyptians. If that what you guys want, go ahead, be my guests. Truly yours, Hashim Badr Eldin
