Please excuse the use of English – it saves me a lot of time!
I think the answer to your question has to be presented in many interrelated parts.
First, the very uneven political development of the Party itself – the repression and ideological countermeasures by forces that are more resourceful and not equally burdened.
Second, internally the Party experienced tumultuous events ranging from internal divisions to basic survival – all of which tended to obscure its political message and retard its expansion. No one can begin to appreciate the significance of post July 19 era or the impact of economic and social repression by the NIF.
Third, the challenges presented by the collapse of the Soviet model and the process of renewal.
Fourth, the Party is no longer the lone voice for modernizing in the Sudan. Many new organizations have come up all essentially arguing the same message – although they tend to go to enormous efforts to deny it!
Fifth, taking a specific message to a potential audience is the intent of any political organization that is not tribalist or driven by religious/feudal considerations is very difficult! Yes, members of trade unions voted for SCP candidates in the past but still voted their sect in general elections. This confirms its conclusions that an ideological bias for a particular class needs democracy and basic freedoms to take root among the target constituency – it involves no automatic returns. A Political opinion or consciousness requires sustained efforts to nurture and update – neither task has been done well by the SCP, for the reasons I outlined above!
Sixth, The Sudanese state is exhausted and is about to collapse under its own ideological burden. The people of the Sudan are experiencing extreme political and social dislocation (alienation). In this context, politics from any quarter does not make perfect sense!
The above leads me to the next issue, which I think is the sole question of your post (directly or otherwise) the relevance of any political organization to the future of our country. For the SCP the challenge is a serious one. Our failure is part of a bigger collective one – all political organizations in the Sudan have failed to create the necessary conditions for them to thrive! Unlike some - we have elected to reform ourselves into something we think will make us a viable player – again not the sole player! The SCP will not hoodwink the people of the Sudan about what it is or what it stands for! (Allow me to correct the false perception about the potential name change – it was 85% of contributions not membership that opted for it).
The last paragraph takes us back to what we have read about the supposed right wing tendencies of the SCP’s leadership since 1977/78. To place this argument in context at that time the Party concluded the following:
1) The social and economic transformation of the Sudan requires the presence of pluralistic democracy that protects basic rights!
2) The SCP or any other Party in the Sudan will remain unable to rule the Sudan on its own regardless of its political mandate or repressive abilities because of the pluralism and fragility that pervades our existence.
3) The SCP will enter alliances based on issues prioritized by its own program – democracy, peace, and the role of the law are at the top! The NDA, before it developed its mortal wounds, was one such alliance that met all of the SCP criteria. Those seeking alternative alliances can do so on their own. The infantile repudiation of traditional parties is not rooted in realism and as such is likely only to cause a future misadventure!
I believe those conclusions about alliance to have been correct!

On the SCP’s Economic Platform (as we are approaching the end)!
The SCP does not subscribe to trickle down planning or economics (the other extreme). Quite simply the economy of the Sudan is riddles with asymmetries that do not work in favor of working people! It does not believe that the free market can correct such imbalances on its own! Capital will seek to maximize its returns by investing in places where significant developments has already taken place and thus perpetuating the asymmetry that is ripping the country to pieces! Needed is the centralization of the investment function to allow and enfranchise all the Sudanese in the country! This by definition requires promoting the primacy of the public sector!
It is not averse to private property or even privatization as long as it is not confused with enriching the rich.
My next piece would be on the issue democracy – internal as well as external.
Sudan for all the Sudanese ..السودان لكل السودانيين
