من دواعي الفخر والاعتزاز
تعد قافية الشاعر الإنجليزي صمويل تايلور كلوردج، الموسومة بقافية البحار القديم، علامة في ما يأخذ النفس ويغري بالرحلة للأعماق والأقطار البعيدة، وأن فيها من السحر الأخاذ ما جعل الوقوف عندها بمنزلة سجدة الشعر التي ابتدعها الشاعر الفرزدق وهو يسمع لقول الآخر: "وجلا السيول على الطلول كأنها زبرٌ تَجَِدُ متونَها أقلامُها، أو بمنزلة تمام الحج عند كثير عزة: " تمام الحج أن تقف المطايا على عفراء وضاعة اللثام"، هذا، وقد سبق لي من قبل الاستشهاد بالبيتين في موضع آخر، ودونك أبيات صاحب الأفيون:
Day after day, day after day,
We stuck, nor breath nor motion;
As idle as a painted ship
Upon a painted ocean.
Water, water, everywhere,
And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, everywhere,
Nor any drop to drink.
من طائفة هذا التعبير سمعتهم بفداسي يصفون سكون الشجر وانعدام حركة الهواء " كأنه صورة" والناس يشتكون الحر والكهرباء المقطوعة، وكأنهم يقولون باللسان الآخر
(As idle as a painted ship)
ومما يدعو للفخر والاعتزاز أن نشير لعلامتين بارزتين من محيط قريتنا الحبيبة ، هي عندي بمنزلة قافية الأردمون ( البّحار) القديم كما هي في نفوس علماء الشعر ونقاده، وبمنزلة سجدة الفرزدق، وتمام حج الكثير ومن منا لا يحب الكثير وعفراه؟ ولكنه آثر حجاً آخر بخلاف ما عهد الأوائل وما عهدنا. وها هي الأيام جاءت بقبيل ما لم يعهد ولكنه هذه المرة من فداسي ولا فخر، وقد يرى فيه من ضروب الإمتاع درجة فوق ما حفل به قلب كثير عزة أو طرب له الفرزدق ومن سواهما، ولعلي أريكم منه هذه المرة عملين:
الأول:
لرجل تجاوز عامه الثمانين، وأكمل العام الدراسي الثاني بإحدى الكليات الجامعية ، وأنه سيكون – إن شاء الله – أول خريج جامعي دخل ودرس الجامعة، وتخرج فيها بعد أن تخطى عمره الثمانين عاماً، ويحلم الرجل بالهجرة إلى أمريكا بعد أن ينهي عامه الدراسي الأخير. ويسعدنا أن نعلن اسمه في قوائم خريجي الجامعات من فداسي الحليماب على المدى القريب إن شاء الله تعالى. وترقبوا قصة هذا الكفاح وهذه العزيمة في مقال سيوافيكم به الأخ إسحاق بله قريباً جداً. وحتى لا يدهش الناس أن جد هذا الرجل قد توفي قبل 100 عام تقريباً، وأنه كان يقرأ مجلة المصور على مشهد ومرأى من الناس من على كرسيه قبالة منزل لا تخطئه العين فهل تصدقون؟
انتظروا الأخ إسحاق عنده الخبر الكامل.
الثاني:
دراسة تحليلية للطالبة مها عبد المنعم محمد أحمد الجاك، وليكن معلوماً لديكم أن صاحبة هذه الدراسة تدرس الآن بالمرحلة المتوسطة ، ولا يتعدى عمرها الـ 16 سنة، وقدمت أعمالها تلك في العام الماضي، ونشرت أعمالها بمكتبة إحدى الجامعات الإنجليزية كأعمال متفردة، ;كما وأن لها أعمالأ أخرى سنتوفر على نشرها بإذن الله، ونحن أدعى للإشادة والتقدير عمن سوان. وتجدر الإشارة إلى أختها فاطمة ( 12 سنة) وإنها هي التي كرمت من قبل عمدة ليدز، وذلك حسب التصحيح الذي وفيت به من وقبل والدها برسالة اللإكترونية في يوم 30/12/2006م وستجدون نصها في الصحفة التالية.
وآمل بعد نشر الدراسة أن نسمع تعقيبات الآخرين، لأن ذلك ما يدعو للاستمرار والتشجيع لنشر جهود أبناء وبنات القرية ، وأعتقد أن ذلك يشكل بنية جيدة للتعريف الحقيقي بالبلدة، ومن جانبنا فقد كلفنا الأستاذ أبي البشرى بالتوفر على إبداء وجهة نظره الفنية ، وقد تكرم الأستاذ أبي بالموافقة، ومع ذلك ندعو المختصين في هذا المجال للمساهمة، وسنحاول إبراز هذه الجهود لنهديها لأهلنا باللغة التي يفهمونها وأن أي تعليق أو تعريف بالدراسة سيكون له أعمق الأثر في نفس الطالبة مها، ونسأل الله أن يوفقها والشكر من بعد الله لأبويها اللذين أحسنا تربيتها وتقويمها. وإلى نص الدراسة التي بعثها لي مشكوراً والدها الدكتور عبد المنعم الجاك، مفتتحاً إياها :

Media Assignment Analysis of the First Seven Minutes of “Clueless”

Clueless is a film about the carefree life of a rich teenage girl. It is set in America and based on Jane Austin’s novel ‘Emma’. The opening sequence gives us an idea of the style and genre of the film. Camera angles, soundtrack and lighting create a laid back atmosphere. It is made clear that this is a lighthearted comedy with the purpose to entertain.
The bright title graphics, lively music and the youthful characters introduced in the early shots suggest that this is a teenage comedy particularly aimed at teenage girls because of main characters love of fashion. The audience can quickly distinguish that she is the main character because it is her voice we hear in the voiceover. This is interesting because the audience can get an insight into her thoughts and emotions. Everything is seen from Cher’s perspective, which will help them to understand her more.
The title graphics are made up of brightly lit letters and interesting typography. Similarly the Paramount logo has been edited to give it a sort of carefree youthful feel, suggesting that this is a fun, fresh, lighthearted film. The bright pinks, greens, yellows and blues used to colour the fast moving bubble writing gives the film a ‘young’ edge. Judging from the feminine colours and bubble writing we are given the impression that this film is aimed mostly at teenage girls rather than boys.
Similarly, the lively atmosphere created by the music gives the audience another indication that this film is aimed at young people. The music is upbeat and light hearted because the music is played over the paramount logo it gives a rebellious effect. The song ‘kids’ by Kim Wilde is used during the cut to first images it is a fast rock track which is effective because it boosts the celebratory mood of these first scenes. The song is well suited to this film because it sums up Cher’s life as ‘the teenage dream’. The same style of music is used when Cher is seen driving her deep. The lively mood of the song ‘rushing by’ compliments her carefree happy life. As the words rushing by are sang the title graphics start shaking on the screen this is another example of the films cheerful atmosphere created by the use of sound and visual aids. The montage of shots shows Cher’s fulfilled lifestyle the camera ‘jumps’ from person to person in these swift shots.
The opening sequence of this film attracts the audience by shooting Cher’s great lifestyle. The audiences are given a ‘taster’ of Cher’s life we see her driving, shopping, socializing, and generally having a great time. The great colours created by the glorious weather create an energized atmosphere on screen. The lighting is organized to banish shadows and make everything brighter, boosting the characters happiness and confidence. Cher is always central in the shots, which make her look popular as friends surround her.
After the opening shots in ‘Clueless’ Cher starts to narrate the story. Her dialogue is laid back and humorous. She uses a lot of slang and describes her life as ‘way normal’ but then contradicts herself by using a computer to pick her clothes. This is important because the main character’s humorous attitude will make the audience like her. Her spacious room, the amount of clothes she can pick from the computer and the masses of shoes we see in the background reveal to the audience that Cher is very wealthy. Fashion is a very important factor in Cher’s life. She spends a lot of time searching for the right outfit to wear.
In the first images Cher and Dionne look very happy when they are shopping. The title music’ Fashion’ by David Bowie provides commentary on what is important to Cher. Fashion makes her happy and confident. After she has picked her clothes for the day she skips around looking pleased for herself. In part of this scene Cher is looking in the mirror. Closest to the camera is a medium close up of Cher. From behind and reflected in the mirror is a medium shot of Cher from the front. The director uses the mirror to suggest two sides of Cher.
Cher’s father is portrayed as a powerful no nonsense man. The way in which the camera follows this character and places him in a low angle shot gives the impression that someone is following him. In the first images of Cher’s father he bursts violently through the door while the camera tries to keep up with him. The shot of the back of his head and broad shoulders suggest he is a big powerful man. From the frightened reaction of the maid when she sees him it is clear that he is not a person to be reckoned with. In Cher’s voiceover she mentions that her ‘daddy is a litigator’ he gets $500 an hour she sounds proud of her father and is impressed with the amount of money he makes.
Cher cares for her dad and is concerned about his health. When they move into the kitchen she tries to get him to drink some orange juice because it’s healthy. This is a softer side to Cher as all we have seen so far in her vainer side. Her farther is a very work driven man. He refuses to drink her orange juice and rushes a round looking for his suitcase to go to work. The camera as well as Cher follows him around the kitchen emphasizing his importance. He insults his parents, which humours the audience. Even though the joke was not deliberate it makes him more likeable in the audience. Cher spends a lot of time chasing her father in the morning, but he just argues with her as if he is a litigator at work. He is too busy getting to work to talk to his own daughter.
In the next scene Cher is seen driving her jeep to school. Even though Cher is privileged enough to own her own jeep she behaves spoilt and acts irresponsibly. She takes her car for granted as in the voiceover she says that it will do for her to learn on but she will get a better car next time. Cher is a careless driver and lacks responsibility. When she knocks over a plant pot she refuses to accept that it was her fault and claims that ‘it came out of no where’ The birds eye view in this shot allows us to see what Cher describes. She is laidback and confident nothing seems to really face her.
The long shot of Dionne shows how big her house is. The audience can see a full-length view of her against her large house, establishing that she also is very wealthy. The audience is made to think whether Cher and Dionne friendship is just based on money as Cher states that they are friends because; we both know what it is like to have people be jealous of us. This is a very superficial basis for a friendship. There is no mention of anything else they have in common apart of money although it is made clear that they share the same love of fashion. They both draw attention to themselves by wearing bright colours and extravagant accessories. They are overly confident and want to create an impression and stand out. Cher carries on driving recklessly. She is not really fussed about rules. She goes through a stop sign but does not even care. She reacts in a laid back manner and says ‘I totally paused’.
A medium shot shows Cher and Dionne walking into the school. It allows both of them a space in the frame and gives them a sense of their importance as they stand out from the crowd. This shows they are important characters in the film. Cher and Dionne consider themselves better than others in their school. They refuse to move out of the way for anyone and strut in the centre as if they own the school.
Cher does not seem to be very interested in what Dionne is talking to her about as her voiceover drowns out Dionne’s moaning. This explores the possibility of whether Cher and Dionne’s friendship is based on anything else but wealth and vanity. When the camera focuses on Murray’s backside the low-slung trousers and the way he ‘bounces’ is very humorous. The hip music that starts playing gives us the impression that he is cool and popular, but is a comical character that shouldn’t be taken seriously. When the couple start arguing a huge crowd forms. They appear to perform to the crowd and enjoy this attention. This signifies their importance among their peers.
Even though there is an argument going on the camera follows Cher when she walks away. This is another indication that Cher is the star of the show, so the camera needs to focus on her. When Cher leaves she gives the impression that she is above everyone. She is not pleased when her friend gets all the attention and she is being ignored. She walks away with her nose in the air. She also believes that high school boys are not good enough for her. So it is very humorous when she pushes one of them towards the floor when they ‘try it on’ with her. The audience is able to laugh at her vanity and at the same time enjoy the sight of her pushing him to the floor.
Another good example of humour is in the classroom scene. Cher trivializes an important argument and has obviously not done any research on the topic. Instead she talks about her own experiences of her father’s 50th birthday party to help her argue a political point. The music played during the climax of her speech is patriotic and rousing. This amuses the audience because it shows contrast between the serious music and Cher’s laidback approach to a controversial argument. Cher is an important peer amongst her classmates. Even though her speech seemed trivial and frivolous and the class was obviously not listening she still gets a great applause from her audience because she is popular. It matters to Cher what people think of her and so looks pleased with her and feels very self assured. She feels very worried of what her father might think of her debate grade being just a ‘C’.
In the next scene Cher is talking to Dionne on her mobile. She is centered in the middle of the shot and her voice can be heard above the numerous other characters in the background. Again this gives us a sense of her importance. When this film was made mobiles were expensive and considered a great luxury. Cher and Dionne are very privileged to not just own them but ring each other when they are just a few paces away from each other.
The main elements of the film’s language such as the music, title graphics and the way the shots are put together combine to give the film an enjoyable atmosphere. The fast pace of the opening shots are fun and lighthearted. The scenes always emphasize Cher’s importance in the film. She comes across as very vain but the comical insights into her thoughts and emotions encourage a greater understanding of the main character so the audience can like her. The way she cares for her father explores the idea that there is another side to Cher. This is a humorous film with interesting characters. Although it is aimed at teenage girls everyone can enjoy it.
