How to format the hard drive...
In order to format the hard drive the first thing you have to find out is what Operating System (OS) you're going to install, if you plan on installing windows95, you must format the hard drive with MS-DOS, or a windows95 boot disk; one thing that you must know is that windows95 and ms-dos, both uses the FAT16 file format; if you plan on installing windows98/ME, or windows2000, you must format the hard drive in the FAT32 file format, which is the file format they use, to do it , you must use a boot disk from any of them.
Many hard drive manufacturers, specially Maxtor, are shipping their hard drive with a floppy which contain a utility very useful that takes through the steps of formatting the hard drive, these can also be used when formatting other hard drives, not only theirs.
With the computer off put in the floppy that you're going to use, start up the computer, at the end of the process you'll be at the A: prompt, type Format c: and press the Enter key, the computer will ask you if you're sure you want to do that, press Enter and the formatting process will begin. At the left-bottom the screen will display in what percent the process is at any particular moment. When the process is finish, it will ask you for a name for the volume (hard drive), don't type anything and press Enter. If you enter a name for the hard drive, and latter on you want to do something with it, if you do not remember the hard drive's name, it won't let you do anything.
How to change the floppy drive...
To change a floppy drive is very easy, disconnect the two cables from the back of the floppy drive, the data cable and the power cable, unscrew the screws that hold it to the case, take the floppy out of the case and, in the same way put the other one. When you put the other one make sure you connect the two cable to the back, and attach it to the case with the screws. Some of them you can take out from the front of the case, others can be taken out from the inside, familiarize with the case, and try to find out which is your case, whichever the case is, you must never force anything.
How to change the hard drive...
Follow a process similar to the one of the floppy drive, but this time there is a small difference, every hard drive or CD-Rom comes with a set of jumpers that must be set, they must be defined as Slave or Master. If you're putting the hard drive alone, you must set the jumper as Master, if you're putting the hard drive together with another one on the same IDE controller, you must set one as Master and the other one as Slave, the ONE that the computer will boot from, that is, the ONE where the operating system is or will be installed, must be the Master, and the other one will be the Slave. In each IDE controller you can put two device, but one must be the Master, and the other, the Slave.
