The Scientific Method for writing Nubian Languag using the Latin Script

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Scientific Method of using the Latin Characters for writing the Nubian Language

Dear friends, greetings! First allow me to express my sincere apology for writing in English. I use a public internet cafe. We see that many of us try to use the Lating (not the English) script to write the Nubian words or sentences as using the Arabic script may well increase the confusion. In this regard I remember presenting a paper entitled: "Competing Orhtographies for writng Nubian Languages", which was presented in the 7th International Conference of Nilo-Saharan Languages, 15-19 February 2004 in Khartoum. Later the paper was published in 2005 in a book edited by Dr. Leoma Gilly about writing the Sudanese languages. In this paper I discussed in length the problems of using the three scripts: Latin, Arabic and Old Nubian to write the two modern Nubian languages, namely Nobiin and Dongolawi-Kenzi. Furthermore, I proposed a writing system which I have so far subjected to many trials with very successful results. In this regard, I say that the Nubians have not yet developed such a system. Using the writing characters of Old Nubian does not mean that we have a system. This means that untill now, with the exception of what I have developed, we do not have a writing system. The problem is that those who are active in writing the Nubian languages do not seem to be interested in knowing what is developed. This means that those who use the Old Nubian script to write our languages are doing so in the most un-scientific way. That is becaus writing is not only about "letters", but rather about a system of writing in its own right. Very few of our activists know this. The writing system has nothing to do with the question of which script we use, whether Latin, Arabic or Old Nubian. Anyway, this is something I do not want to discuss here for reasons of space. If some of you is interested, I can send to them the essay by email, provided that they have the Nubian fonts in their computers.
What I want to say here is concerend with the scientific way of using the Latin script to write Nubian languages. Here I am not proposing a writing system, but a hybrid of two systems one of them called TRANSLITERATION and the other is called TRANSCRIPTION. Although both of them are distinct, I merge them for reasons of practicabilty and easiness. The purpose of this is simply to help those who want to include a Nubian phrase in their post do it properly and in a scientific way. The method I am going to apply is very simple; I will write certain words using the Lating script. From there you can get the whole theory of it and then you can apply it. At the beginning there may be some difficulties, but with practice you will all master it very soon.
The main problem here is the vowels, such as /e/, /a/, /o/, /u/ and /i/ because these are the short vowels. Their long equivilant vowels are /ee/, /aa/, /oo/ /uu/ and /ii/. To make this clear, I will show how the following personal names should be written; I will write the them first following the wrong way in which most of us write them, then I will write them in the right and scientific way:
    Suad (wrong)/ Su'aad (correct)j
    Khalil (wrong)/ Khaliil (correct)j
    Waleed or al-Jazeera (both wrong)/ Waliid or al-Jaziira (correct)j
    Talodi (wrong)/ Taloodi (correct)j
    Ahmed (wrong)/ Ahmad (correct)j
    Mohamed (wrong)/ Muhammad (correct)j
    Adel (wrong)/ 'Aadil (correct)j
Kamil, Kamal (wrong)/ Kaamil, Kamaal (corrcet)j
    Lotfi (wrong)/ Lutfi (correct)j
    Abboud (wrong)/ 'Abbuud (correct)j
    Omer (wrong)/ 'Umar (correct)

Now I will turn to certain sounds in the Nubian languages, which are very peculiar to the African languages in general. The first one is a combination between the sound of /j/ and /n/, such as the sound found in the Nubian word for life. This particular word could be written in two different ways; the first is /aanji/ and the second- following the method we propose and which is followed all over the world is /aanyi/, i.e. using the diagraph /ny/ . Thus the word for /talk/ in Nubian should be written as follows:/bany/. In the same way, the sentence for /What is he saying/ should be written as /tar minga banynyi?/j
The other sound is a combination between the /n/ and the /g/, like in the word for /fish/ in Nubian which should be written /angissi/j

Now let me give you some hints about the science of writing system. In writing languages nothing is more wrong than to assume that languages should be written according to how they sound, i.e. one sound= one writing character. This is called TRANSCRIPTION. The recent theories of the science of writing systems (called GRAMMATOLOGY) say that writing a language by TRANSCRIPTION results in arresting the concerned language, thus forbidding it from developing and eventually it will die. So far, our Nubian experience has been to write our language by TRANSCRIPTION. And this may show you how doing things in the wrong way may be extremely harnful, even much more harmful than if we had not written it.

The golden rule in GRAMMATOLOGY is that writing system should first show the structure of the language and, secondly, the sound of it.j
