As Iron sharpens Iron, so is a great man with his friends.
Proverb 27:17
Dear family and friends of Mr Abdalla Mansour,
If there is any Bible verse that uniquely describes the character of Mr Abdalla Mansour, it is this verse in Proverb 27:17 “As Iron sharpens Iron, so is a great man with his friends”. Mr Abdalla Mansour was intelligent, creative and gifted, and he certainly helped make the Sudanese community better.
The late 1980’s saw a rise in religious fundamentalism in Sudan. This culminated in a totalitarian regime that conceded power after a military cue de ta. The Sudanese community in Australia at that time comprised of only few hundreds. Sudan was not well known to Australians, or to Australia’s political system and organisations. The Sudanese community started to feel the urge to something for their fellow community in Sudan. We developed a motto “Do all the good you can. By all the Godly means you can”.
1991 brought forward the courageous voice of Mr Abdalla Mansour. He called upon the community to unite and expose the plight of the people in Sudan. The Sudanese Ethnic Group was consequently formed to champion the cause of Sudan and to solicit parliament’s endorsement for Sudanese migration. Two very long years of hard work resulted in the passing of legislation by parliament in October 1992, to include migration from Sudan under the Special Assistance Category known then by SAC-212. The first flood of Sudanese migrants started to fill the streets of Blacktown and Liverpool in 1994, and by the end of the year 2000 tens of thousands of Sudanese have landed in Australia multiplying our numbers of 1991 by 25 folds. The SAC-212 program expired in 2000, but the work of the Sudanese Ethnic Group continued to open the eyes of the Australian organisations to the plight of the Sudanese refugees in Egypt and Kenya.
Mr Abdalla Mansour is the founding Chairman of the Sudanese Ethnic Group. He was the forbearer behind its success, and he stood head and shoulder above all of us. Hundreds upon hundreds of hours were spent in meetings, case preparation, and gathering of documentation. All efforts were expended in consultation with every parliamentarian, every church organisation and leader, and every government and community agency. Work groups and meetings were regularly attended at the Ethnic Communities Council of NSW and the Ethnic Affairs Commission. Public functions were organised biannually to celebrate Sudan’s Independence and to exhibit Sudan’s unique cultural and ethnic heritage.
Mr Abdalla Mansour was also one of the founding members of the Australian Sudanese Coptic welfare Association, a well known organisation that caters to the welfare needs of the community in Sydney and Sudan. He served as a board member for the first five years. He was an active board member that brought insight and vision to the progress of the community.
The motto continued “Do all the good you can. By all the Godly means you can”.
To Mrs Minerva Mansour, I say:
Mr Abdalla Mansour will be missed by all of us. But you will be the one to miss him the most. I pray that your heart will be filled with the heavenly peace that only God can give. We salute you as a companion of achievement that walked hand in hand alongside a great leader. His success is certainly part and parcel your success.
To Mrs Amani Gayed, Mr Najib Mansour and family specially the grand children, I say:
Let us not weep as though we have no hope. Rather let us celebrate this life of courage, vision and purpose.
To every young man and woman in our community, I say:
We cannot despair. Rather rise up, and carry the burning torch and serve your community diligently.
To all community leaders and members, young and old, acknowledging the representation from all the Sudanese associations today, I charge you as we contemplate on the legacy of a great man:
Do all the good you can
By all the Godly means you can
In all the ways and all the places you can
At all the times you can
To all the people you can
As long as ever you can
And by the grace of God, climb every mountain, because you can
