Quote: Facts and figures Vessels Operated tonnage: more than 500 vessels Operated vessel capacity: more than 1,300,000 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) Miles sailed 2004: about 35,000,000 miles Port calls 2004: about 32,000 calls G-type vessel capacity: about 7,000 TEU S-type vessel capacity: about 6,600 TEU K-type vessel capacity: about 6,000 TEU S and K-type reefer capacity: about 700 plugs Containers Operated containers: more than 1,400,000 units Organisation Employees: more than 35,000 Number of representations: about 325 offices Located in: more than 125 countries Did you know? If all containers in the world were lined up, it would create a container wall with a length of 108,000 km. This is a third of the way to the moon, equivalent to 18 times the length of the Great Wall of China or 2.7 times around the earth at the Equator. The main engine of an S-type vessel produces about 77,000 horsepower or the same power as 770,000 humans pulling together at the same time. Unloading an S-class vessel would require an area equivalent to a line of trucks measuring 50 km to be moved out of the terminal. In 2004 Maersk Sealand made 32,000 port calls – equivalent to almost four port calls per hour or one call every 15 minutes. In 2006 we will make more than 33,000 port calls and sail more than 50 million nautical miles The S-type needs 360 tonnes of paint to cover the whole vessel – this is about the weight of 100 elephants. If all the Maersk Sealand containers were stacked on top of each other they would reach approximately 2,500 kilometres high, equivalent to stacking 8,550 Eiffel Towers on top of each other. An S-class vessel’s capacity is 217,800 cubic metres, which equals 217,800,000 litres of milk or more than a third of the world’s total milk consumption in a year. The propeller of an S-type vessel has a weight of 90 tonnes - approx. the same weight as a medium-sized locomotive |
