February 17th, 2006 - April 1st, 2006 Sudan: The Land and the People Children of Darfur: Gen Genocide Khalid Koli Curator: Eathon G. Hall, Jr.
In these three projects, Aljira explores the cultural and political landscape of Sudan, Africa’s largest and most culturally diverse country. Sudan: The Land and the People is a traveling exhibition of photographs organized by Meridian International Center, Washington D.C. In these stunning photographs, drawn from a recent publication of the same title, internationally acclaimed photographer Michael Freeman reveals the incredible diversity of Sudan, one of Africa’s most culturally varied countries. A multimedia presentation of over 150 drawings by children from Kalma, Darfur’s largest, most notorious, refugee camp, Children of Darfur: Gen Genocide depicts mass killings, bombings and other atrocities. These visceral accounts in crayon, smuggled out of the country by Cherry Hill, New Jersey pediatrician, Jerry Ehrlich, are circulated by the Darfur Alert Coalition. And, in partnership with Darfur Rehabilitation Project, a local Darfurian human rights advocacy group, Khalid Kodi features a series of drawings, paintings, and installations by this Sudanese contemporary artist, which references traditional imagery and Sudan’s violent and turbulent history. These timely projects illuminate the issues arising from the crisis in Darfur, as well as broaden public awareness of the complex and cultural richness of Sudan.
Sudan: The Land and the People, a revealing publication of photographs by Michael Freeman, is available with contributions by Timothy Carney, the last accredited Ambassador to Sudan, freelance writer Victoria Butler, and a forward by President Jimmy Carter.
Sudan: The Land and the People was organized by Meridian International Center, Washington, D.C. and has been made possible by generous support from Michael & Marilyn Dore, with additional support from The Honorable Mayor Sharpe James and the Honorable Councilwoman-at-Large Gayle Chaneyfield Jenkins. Special thanks to Blanche Foster, Darfur Rehabilitation Project, Lou Ann Merkle, Darfur Alert Coalition and Jerry Ehrlich.
Opening Reception: Thursday, February 16, 2006, 6:30–8:30 pm
