The president of Bechtel's of civil infrastructure divison, Peter Dawson, told Construction Week that Bechtel has carried out series of linked projects with a higher value - such as four LNG projects on which it is currently engaged with a value of around $30-$35bn.
"But as a single project - even as a consortium - the $9.5bn project would rank as one of the highest lump-sum turnkey projects in our history," said Dawson.
He added that its consortium - which also consists of Consolidated Contractors Corp (CCC), Saudi contractor Almabani General Contracting and German engineering firm Siemens will require up to 25,000 workers at peak and up to 2,000 professional staff.
However, he also said the precise numbers had yet to be confirmed. "For craftwoakers it would be somewhere between 20-25,000 peak... that has to be refined because until you do your design and your sequencing you don't know where your peaks will occur."
The company is responsible for the biggest package in terms of contract value.
Although it is working on two lines - compared to the three being handled by the consortium led by Spain's FCC - its element contains more of the network's stations and a greater proportion of it involves tunneling work underground.
The consortium will deliver 63km of a total of 176km and 42 of the 86 stations through Line One and Line Two Line One runs from North to South and contains a total of 26 stations (22 regular and 4 transfer stations), including two of the network's major stations at King Abdullah Financial District and Olaya. Over half of these stations will be underground.
Line Two stretches 25.3km and runs through the city from East to West along King Abdullah Road. It will have 16 stations - 13 regular and three transfer stations.
The consortium will spend the next eight months on detailed design and enabling works, including the diversion of existing utilities. A four-year core construction period for the civil works is then likely to start in the second quarter of 2014. It will then be followed by an installation, testing and commissioning phase for the metro's trams.. |
