Fabian Agamlong Guem Bol
January 1, 1940 - March 13, 2013 Resided in Springfield, VA
General Fabian Agamlong Guem Bol 1940-2013: A Remarkable Life
Fabian Agamlong Guem Bol was born in 1940 in Bulic, a Dinka village in what is now the new country of South Sudan. He was the thirteenth of fourteen children eight of whom died in infancy. Because 13 is an unlucky number in Dinka as well as American culture, he was referred to as child number 12B. In his unpublished memoir written in 2004, Agamlong (which means interpreter in English) recalled his young life on what he called the Dinka Prairie where the hunt for food was constant and the threat from lions unending. The feud between villagers and lions "never relented," he wrote.
Everything changed for Agamlong when he was chosen to attend a school run by foreign missionaries. "It was the darkest hour of my life," he remembered, fearing his father "had thrown me away." But despite the hardships in the schools he would attend in the ensuing years, he eventually realized that education was a blessing and a route to a better life -- as did his father who, on his deathbed in 1948, told his brother to support Agamlong's education "even if it meant selling our last cow for school fees." (Agamlong was educated at Kuajok Elementary School; Busari Intermediate School, Rumbek Secondary School, and the Sudan Military Collage.)
After he completed his education, Agamlong's rise to the pinnacle of Sudanese life was swift despite growing tensions between northern and southern Sudan. Not long after the country won its independence from the British in 1956, he entered the Sudan Military College. There was some resistance to Southerners in the army, he recalled. But he prevailed – rising rapidly through the ranks – despite the difficulty of navigating the minefield of ethnic and racial tensions in a military pre-occupied by what was called the Southern problem – not to mention the instability of political leadership in Khartoum. Despite the obstacles, he eventually achieved the rank of general, the highest position ever reached by a Southerner in the Sudanese army.
During his long career, General Agamlong commanded the following military institutions of the Sudan Army: Commander of the Infantry School at Jubeit, Kassala Province (1969); Commander of the Sudan Army Western Command, El Fashir, Darfur Province (1980); Commander of the Sudan Army Northern Command, Shendi, Northern Province (1982); and, Commander of the Chiefs of Staff College, Omdurman, Khartoum Province (1984).
In his memoir, General Agamlong wrote that he was proudest of his work to reduce the conflict with the South on behalf of the Transitional Military Council that took power after the ouster of President Nimeri in 1985. He also enjoyed his time in India as Sudan's first military attaché there. In the early 1980s, he won the privilege of attending the U.S. Army War College near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, which he called "an experience unparalleled in my life." He was impressed not only by the quality of the education at the institution but also by the warmth and generosity of the Americans he met.
General Agamlong was as fulfilled in his personal life as he was in his career. In 1965, he married Hayat Attala, an enduring union that produced seven children. The firstborn – on March 15, 1966 – was Ater whom he named for his great grandfather. Bernard, Suzan and Robert would follow and, while he was serving in India, Hayat gave birth to three wonderful triplets Guvany, Wilson and Edward – born after only seven months and five days. If the military and politics was his passion, General Agamlong's refuge was his family, the source of much joy and satisfaction. His consolation was his religious faith. From the time he was baptized in 1943, General Agamlong never wavered in his Christian beliefs. He remained a Catholic all his life. His faith and his family were his rock.
Few among us will ever live a life of so much change, as did General Agamlong. He was born into traditional life among the rural Dinka of Southern Sudan. Through hard work and dedication, he rose to become one of Sudan's most prominent citizens and proudly represented his country at home and abroad. His final journey – in 1999 -- was to the United States, a country that he had come to know and love decades before when he attended the war college in Pennsylvania. It was fitting that he lived long enough to see his fellow Southerners, about whose future he had agonized all his life, vote for their independence in 2011.
General Agamlong is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mrs. Hayat Atalla, seven children: Bona Ater, Bernard, Suzan, Robert, Guvany, Edward, and Wilson; and four grandchildren: Joshua, Arek, Amir, and Rothann all of whom loved him dearly. General Agamlong also has a legion of colleagues and friends on two continents who will never forget him, and a host of grateful citizens in both Sudan and South Sudan who honor his service and commitment during the difficult and tumultuous years after the victory over colonialism.
