Racist Experiences by Malcolm X
The white people also treat a black person the same way they would treat an animal. They make you feel as if you do not measure up. They will never treat you as one of them even after stepping away from your principles. Malcolm, who was brought up in the society of white people faced the same discrimination from the white people.
Malcolm conked his hair just so he could look a bit like a white person. That made him look more white than black. His beliefs and his culture were more like the white man’s beliefs. If the black man started to warm up towards a white society, he or she would get the gaze that would make him subside and see themselves for what they are, Black people.
Racist Experience by B.E Dubois
As a child in school, Dubois was involved in a card exchanging session with his fellow children in which every child was supposed to exchange cards with the other child in the class. One of the children that were involved in the session was a newcomer girl. Dubois was about to exchange the card with that girl when the girl threw him the white gaze. This made Dubois step back and view himself in another light.
This is what prompted him to start feeling that he was different from the other children. He realized that although he was amongst the white people, they still treated him as a black individual. He came to realize that he would never measure up to the white society. Dubois labels it “Double Consciousness”. This is where the black person is forced to look at himself in the perspective of the white people and therefore they adopt a different character from their real one.
When one adopts the double consciousness, they see themselves in the eyes of other people. In this case, the person has to be someone else and behave like that person so as to please them while hiding their real character.
Racist Experience by Sarah Bartman
George Yancy goes ahead and mentions a Khoisan woman from Southern Africa, Sarah who is taken all around Europe for display since she is supposed to act as a deep see specimen. This according to him is dehumanization. It cannot be compared to science or civilization but it is selfishness that takes place in the society to a point of depriving the poor woman of her rights. He describes his anger as he reads the book; it hurts him so much that he cannot see some of the words.
He goes on and speaks out his mind by saying just how someone’s skin can be treated like a person’s own enemy. The skin that protects you from insects and all the harm from outside. This is torture that black people have been going through for years yet they are not allowed to step up and strike since if they do, they are the ones to blame for everything.
Yancy’s Conclusion on Racism Yancy states that when a white person locks up the door as a black person crosses the street nearby, when the white person gives the black one a gaze as she approaches, when a white clutches his/her bag closer as the black one gets near, when that person looks at the black one as if he does not belong, speak about the black when he /she is around as if the black person cannot hear or understand a thing are all acts of dehumanization.
All these reactions that whites give to blacks make the whites more of the culprits than the innocent people they want to portray. This has made it easier for a black person to yearn to change so that he can be somebody else and fit into the perfect society that the whites tend to live in. This also makes the black person feel that all the security and love that he/she felt is
gone and all that he/she would desire is to be someone or something else.
The black person yearns to fulfill the fantasies of the black body and because of this, it becomes easy for them to turn into the criminals they are today. They have overcome the oppression they have gone through, through the years and they are now the way they are because of how the white people molded them to be.
Personal Argument
Oppression Played a Big Part in Molding the Black Americans
The black people have gone through a number of oppressive situations through the hands of the white people. They were taken to the United States as slaves who worked and toiled for the white people for no payment at all. Because of this, the black people suffered for a number of years and were oppressed by the white people as slaves. During those times, there were only pure races in America, that is, there were no intermarriages that led to half cast children. The black people that were lucky to get a better treatment from the white people were those with naturally curly hair and a lighter skin color compared to the other black people.
This made it easier to manipulate the black people into believing that if you are a bit like the white people, you are more likely to succeed than the people who were completely dark. It made black people to grow with such mentality even after being freed from slavery and they started hating themselves more and they began bleaching their body. This is where the double consciousness is applied since the blacks would today bleach themselves to acquire the white people’s color but in the true sense, they are still black people.
Shame That They Endured for Being Black
Black people have been made to be ashamed of themselves since time immemorial. They have gone through so much suffering and so they are avenging the suffering they have gone through in the hands of the white people. They feel that it is right to smuggle from them and treat them with so much hatred and violence. According to the black population, they are being involved in the right thing since they are just giving the white people a taste of their own medicine.
The black people have turned out to be the way they are because of the ugly treatment they received when they were in slavery. The white people are also paranoid about the whole black people’s behavior. It is true that black people are vulgar and indiscipline but some of them have changed and they go to school and they earn a good education as they deserve. Most of them are in better professions than most white people in the United States and so the white people should excuse them.
The Hard Earned Success
The black people are getting out of the cocoon they used to be in and they are turning out to be more successful than the whites themselves. Examples of blacks who have been successful with time include Martin Luther King, Barrack Obama, Ben Carsons, the Surgeon cam writer, The American black artists are also successful people.
It is rumored that there is a sect that the Black American artists get into so that they can acquire the success they have right now but how true is this? Nobody has been able to prove this and so we keep on believing that black people are
successful because they have worked hard to get there. They have done their best and have stopped being the thugs that people labeled them to be in the past.
Going to School
Most black people have now enrolled in different schools in the United States and all Africans at Large have. There are more and more Universities and other higher learning institutions in the continent coming up every day. Black people are no longer the dumb people that people thought them to be in the past.
They are the contributors of different innovations and inventions in the world .Just last decade, a black person came out and claimed that he had found the remedy to the AIDS infection. The person had no sponsors and so he did not gain any fame.
Modern Day Oppression
To date, black people still face oppression. It may not be very intense like it was in the past, but it is still oppression. Some of the international footballers playing in the European cubs and nations have raised numerous concerns about racial abuse, for instance the recent John Terr case, a Chelsea player who was fined and banned for a number of games, because for racially abusing a black player. The white people gave freedom to the African countries in the past but they still monitor what the Africans do to date. They snatched the African countries resources when they were still under their under their colonialism and they still do the same to date.
The whites only help the Africans out when they have an interest in mind. For example, the other day when they contributed poisoned maize to Kenya, one of the African countries.
