A Call for Action on Sudan
Dear Congressman:
- SAPAA(the Sudanese American Public Affairs Association), is an independent, non-partisan, non-religious interest group focused on serving the interests of Sudanese Americans, building stronger ties between the USA and the people of Sudan, promotion of peace, stability, democracy, and good governance in Sudan at large.
- As Americans of Sudanese origin, we have followed with deep concern the recent unrest and repression of basic human rights in Sudan. These events follow ethnic wars against marginalized groups in Darfur, Nuba Mountains, Blue Nile and the far northern parts of the country that threaten further disintegration of the whole country.
- Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, has witnessed some of the worst human rights abuses against people from all parts of Sudan; including extrajudicial killing, torture and rape by NCP government NISS (National Intelligence and Security Service) agents.
- SAPAA believes a shift in US policy towards the NCP government in Khartoum is required to avert further violence and deterioration in basic human rights committed by the NISS apparatus.
- SAPAA believes the recent H.R. 4169(Sudan Peace, Security, and Accountability Act of 2012) bill sponsored by Rep. James McGovern opens a new frontier in addressing the complex issues in Sudan; by providing a comprehensive approach to resolving these issues, paving the way to political pluralism, inclusion and respect for ethnic and religious diversity.
SAPAA calls on the Obama administration and Congress to:
Support the legitimate right of the Sudanese people to peacefully protest, seek a democratic transformation, a plural, inclusive, and accountable government.
Exertmaximum pressure on the Sudanese government and its allies to release all detainees during the recent protests. We are particularly concerned aboutMr. RudwanDawod, a member of our organization who was arrested July 3 during a peaceful demonstration, tortured and is currently facing fabricated terrorism charges.http://kristof.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/07/11/s...rged-with-terrorism/

SAPAA wishes to thank the administration and congress for all the bi-partisan efforts to foster human rights in Sudan thus far. We do hope our concerns as Sudanese Americans are addressed inpolicy and H.R. 4169, paving the way for more engagement and future dialogue on US policies towards Sudan.
