Quote: Public Statement at the Eve of January 9th, 2011 Distinguished Citizens of the Sudan, At the Eve of January 9th 2011, the day of the polling, I would like to seize this opportunity to convey to you my peaceful message for the Referendum. This sacred day is a fulfillment of the promise which the Sudanese People have taken upon themselves six years ago during the signing of the Sudan Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005. It is the culmination of the full implementation of the most salient provisions of the CPA. As the people of Southern Sudan will be heading to cast their ballots in the morning of Sunday 9th January 2011, wherever they may be, my ardent appeal to you is to behave in a peaceful and respectful manner. It is incumbent upon us all to be proud of this great achievement because we have truly managed to implement most aspects of the Agreement, which was spearheaded by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) and the National Congress Party (NCP), our partners in peace. Therefore, the two Parties signatories to the CPA also deserve to be congratulated for the outstanding courage to overcome most of the hurdles on the course of implementation. Fellow compatriots, We are left only with a few hours to make the most vital and extremely important decision of our life time. I urge you all to make your decision in a peaceful manner as we end the longest Journey for the accomplishment of the Agreement. From our side as GOSS, we promise you an atmosphere of calm and guaranteed security as you exercise your democratic right to determine your destiny according to your free will. Similarly, I take this opportunity to further urge the region and the international community to wholeheartedly reaffirm their commitment to the acceptance of the outcome of the referendum. The main objective of this whole exercise is to achieve permanent stability and peaceful co-existence for all Sudanese irrespective of the outcome of the referendum. At this juncture, our message has repeatedly been publicly declared and again I would like to reiterate it today that there is no return to war! The referendum is not the end of the journey but rather it is the beginning of a new one. There is no substitute to peaceful co-existence, cooperation and partnership which we shall and are all committed to embark on in the lifetimes ahead. This is critical for our coming generations whether the vote will lead to a united country or separation. Distinguished countrymen and women, While my brother President Omer Hassan Al-Bashir and I declare our unwavering commitment to keep and maintain peace and security, we equally express the popular opinion in both South and North to provide security to all citizens and especially to Southerners in the North and Northerners in Southern Sudan. All security organs must protect the rights and properties and safeguard the interest of our people during and after the referendum. We are convinced beyond doubt that we will overcome this challenge and hopeful of the realization of peace and security for all irrespective of the outcome of this historic event. I shall be remiss if I do not pay tribute to all those who contributed to the signing of the CPA that has subsequently led to tomorrow’s historic event. On behalf of the SPLM, the Government and people of Southern Sudan and on my own behalf, there are no fitting words of gratitude to express in acknowledgement of the role of the region, particularly IGAD and its partners, the African Union and the International Community for the consistent dedication they all offered in order for peace to be realized in the Sudan. Last but not the least, as leaders we are focused to ensure that this process is concluded in a calm and secure atmosphere. It must be noted by all that whatever the outcome might be it will mark the beginning of a new long determination to a peaceful co-existence. We will work together for the realization of the common interest of all our citizens and sustainable development for the future. Let us all treat this significant moment with serenity and may God bless you all!
