Dear Nadir, Greetings, Thank you for the advice in your first paragraph. The second observation shows misjudgment from your part, and lacks knowledge of community organization and human association and networking. Mustafa Eltinay, who resides in Cleveland, Ohio, is best known for his leadership qualities, strategic planning, and his unique organizational skills and style. Perhaps, his style is attributed to his previous profession, and up-bringing as a child of a diplomat. The paragraph also gave me more influence than I actually have; a humble person from rural Sudan, and only through education, analytical talents, and interaction with the broader and diverse American community. Building community organizations for Sudanese immigrants and refugees in the U.S. is a complex issue; people change over time and space, their needs and problems also change over those domains. Therefore, judging our experience in 2004-2005, to our experience in 2010 is over-simplification. Get involved, be an agent of change; then teach us or influence our participation in such organization, and limit our representation. My response to your fourth argument is this; an excerpt from a report submitted to Mustafa Eltinay, SACD Ohio, president in March 2005, reads: A) The Sudanese American Community Development Organization (SACDO) name has been adopted by the Executive Committee (EC). SACDO constitution has been edited, translated into English with the help of some community members, namely, Uncle Mohamed Ibrahim Salih and Saeif Elhag Musa; the latter has contributed a lot in the translation. We managed to have our organization registered as a non-profit organization under the name “Sudanese American Community Development” by the State of Ohio, and we have received the State of Ohio Certificate listing our organization as “Domestic Articles/ Non-profit” signed and witnessed by J. Kenneth Blackwell, the Ohio Secretary of State. We applied for Employer Identification Number (EIN), and we have received an EIN. This effort has been accomplished with the help of some of our community members, namely, Omar Mohamed Ibrahim has played a key role in making this possible.
Yes, credit and appreciation go to Omar Ibrahim, who was and still is a member of SACD (Ohio). He helped through his office, professional experience, and community involvement to secure the registration for our community organization, as well as other similar organizations. You mentioned our late friend Awaad Ali; may his soul rests in peace. He was best described by the phrase, “Volunteers for the greater good”; the phrase that Abeer Elhag eloquently added to our literature. Did you read the Federation by-laws? I do request you to go over it first, before making quick judgment about the representation, member organization, and whether I am rightfully representing our organization or not. Again, for your information, I am currently part of the Sudanese American Community Development organization committee [leadership] in Columbus, Ohio, and you personally know when this current committee was formed. Another excerpt from the committee meeting minutes on Monday, January 25, 2010, topic discussed was: 1. Organization issue including statutory agent for the organization, and membership fees. You may request the details of the above topic if you are SACD (Ohio) member. Interestingly enough, the footnote message of that reports reads: Transparency is our principle Everybody is welcomed to our meetings. Ideas and opinions are always needed. Those who were present: Hassan Yasin, Abeer Elhag, Abdalla Dawi, Mohamed Gadkarim, and Dr. Maysa El-Sayyid
Answering your question about transparency; my answer is YES. My justification is based upon FSAA By-laws, ARTICLE 5, MEMBER ORGANIZATION (Section 2): Member organizations shall work with the principle of complete transparency, and convey all information to members of each association in what relates to the rules, financial records, and the minutes of meetings for each member association. So, be a member to get full answers. Last, I know your talent, and it would be more advantageous for our community to know your input on FSAA goals and objectives, or any other article. The minutes, by-laws, and documents of this umbrella organization are all available. Cheers, Mohamed Gadkarim
