The Regional Institute of Gender, Peace, Diversity and Rights (RIG/DPR) Project is a five year project funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) and implemented through a partnership between Ahfad University for Women (AUW) in Sudan, Addis Ababa University (AAU) in Ethiopia and Makerere University (MAK) in Uganda. The Project is an innovative initiative that involves a partnership, close collaboration and sharing of experiences, research techniques and research results between three universities in East Africa with technical and financial support from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD). Unlike many similar initiatives that tend to originate in the North, and hence have weaker ownership in the South, this project is initiated, conceived and structured by the AUW in partnership with AAU and MAK. Another distinctive feature of this project is that it involved sustained efforts and activities that extend over a long period of time (five years) and are not entirely focused on staff and students and within university campuses, but reach out to the wider communities, stakeholders and policymakers through dissemination of research findings as well as through carefully selected capacity building initiatives and civic engagement activities. The Project intends to promote knowledge initially within the East African region for directing policy, enhancing advocacy dialogue, indigenous curriculum development and activism on peace, rights and governance gender related issues. These include dimensions of women empowerment, combating all forms of gender based violence, gender justice, engendering peace building, protection of human rights and respect to diversity. Furthermore, promoting knowledge that feeds to direct research based policy on development, migration, enacting federalism, good governance, democracy principles, sustainable environment, humanitarian assistance, post disaster development issues, constitutional and legal reform leading to nation building are crucial components in the Institutes activities to achieve its mission. The Project was written in view of the conflicts in Africa, especially the situation in East African countries and its impacts on women. Although almost everyone in the region was affected by these conflicts and their devastating consequences on lives and livelihoods, women in particular have been gravely affected through disempowerment, displacement and disenchantment. . Women’s participation in conflict resolution and transformation has been overlooked and their rights violated. Addressing issues of gender, diversity and human rights will go a long way in reducing inequalities in promotion of the achievement of the MDGs, UN resolution 1325 and Beijing Platform of Action. The Goal of the Project The overall goal of the Project is to contribute to creating a society where women and men are viewed and treated equally and are fully respected; regardless of their gender, ethnicity or socioeconomic and political background; and create conditions in which all live in peace, dignity and their rights are protected and respected in a society free from all forms of abuse and violations. The purpose of the Project is to build the capacities of the Regional Institute of Gender, Diversity, Peace and Rights (RIG/DPR) at Ahfad University for Women and in two other Partners at Addis Ababa and Makerere universities to promote knowledge, networking and exchange of experience within the region for directing policy, enhancing advocacy dialogue, indigenous curriculum development and activism on gender related issues, peace, respect of diversities and human rights.
The Specific objectives of the Project The Project has four specific objectives: 1. To build and enhance the institutional capacities of RIG/DPR, Makerere and Addis Ababa Universities and enable then to promote their resources to effectively manage the project to achieve its purpose. 2. To promote civic engagement and enable the RIG/DPR, Makerere and Addis Ababa Universities to become forum for advocacy, dialogue and activism on women empowerment, peace and respect to diversity and rights. 3. To build the academic capacities of RIG/DPR, Makerere and Addis Ababa Universities through staff and curriculum development, promoting the regional networking and international profile of these institutions. 4. To promote the creation and dissemination of knowledge and the internationalization of the universities through the promotion of publication of research findings and the exchanges of experiences and expertise among academics and young researchers at national and regional level.
