There is a stairway of an old building…no matter how great the imagination of the architect was (Zaha Hadid)…it can never imagine that this will be the habitat of a family…you might see families living in horizontal streets…in the slums…but seeing a family living a “head” street…upon footfalls…ascending and descending…next to your mattress…that is truly weird…Need is the Mother of all Inventions…a family lives there…water pots compete with them in this place…children I have seen in the picture (not to mention the sleeper, or the one who displays his products in Sanaa Market or the sick)…there are nine children on a stairway, and a woman in black…death, social justice, ,”…in the mourning planet.
The kitchen is a corner of the room…a small wooden table…another one above…and above them an old cooker…decayed…and steel cans…they have another mission…polish and pineapple can have become coffee and bean cans…. ??? (i.e. the missions of cans or “development” and a leap forward? There is a door closed forever…beneath the kitchen, there might be a room which has changed its mission…and became open to the street…as a shop…who knows? I tried to count the number of matchsticks on the floor…I couldn’t.
Didn’t I say that it was pantheism, when I stood still in front of the (strain) picture…a simple photo of a closet and above it a bag of iron…decorated…and above it mattresses reaching the low ceiling…this briefcase took me…like Sinbad’s carpet…to the Orient train…in my country Sudan…when I was a child…and used to go to my sister from Khartoum to Sudan Port…in the train…sitting on that case of iron …with its decorations…and the smell of food emanating from it (tahiniya, ta’mya, jam) and which mom arranged before travel…there is a photo of an Arab leader…torn…intentionally or on purpose…only God knows what lies in the inner selves! There are the names of Allah and a girl praying her God in a photo on the wall…”a photo inside a photo”...How beautiful.

In “Al Maqouli” house: a mattress on the floor….the odor of Vaseline reaches the viewer…you get bored with the scene…it is a morning scene…annoying…the chaos of the blanket, a watch and a pillow on the floor…it happens to you on Sunday mornings when you go back to work…after Friday and Saturday off days…somnolence drags you to bed…and duty calls you to wake up…there is a pillow…which seems to me that it is on his lap? Is it the Empty Pillow, the famous novel by Ihsan Abdel Quddous?
The body is the house of the spirit…where it has built columns of bones…a skilled skeleton (even the ability to draw, run and tickle did not forget him)…and dressed it with meat and tenderness and feeling… opened in its top head, windows to the world…on the inside…seven senses…then it sought…walking and running…with a skeleton…tucked between flesh and nerve…a mobile house…light…charming…sensible… it is the house of the body…when curiosity dwells in…
The same goes for houses where the human spirit lives and where the Man was like the nest and the shell.
