Quote: African Union – United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur COMMUNICATION AND PUBLIC INFORMATION DIVISION UNAMID DAILY MEDIA BRIEF, 2009-01-26 The general security situation in Darfur, especially South Darfur, continues to be tense where Sudanese Government forces, Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and the Sudan Liberation Army (SLM/A) have been engaged in battles over areas of control. As a result of the clashes, local population and some combatants have taken refuge at UNAMID camps, a move which could endanger the safety and security of UNAMID troops in these locations and the civilian population that take refuge in these camps. Banditry and factional clashes have also been increasing in several IDP camps and it is likely that these events could cause wide displacements of civilians and humanitarian implications. UNAMID officials met on 24 January 2009 in Muhajeria with representatives of the JEM to discuss the security situation and the humanitarian situation in the area. UNAMID officials there reported that over 50 IDPs were still seeking protection around the Mission’s headquarters in Graida, following the 24 January 2009 clashes between Government forces and SLM/A. Furthermore, the Sector South Sub-Committee for Ceasefire (CFC) attended the Darfur Security Arrangement Implementation Committee (DSAIC) where issues pertaining to selection of ex-combatants from SLM/A and JEM Peace Wing to undergo reintegration training and the statistics of weapons collected were discussed. It was revealed that 500 assault rifles have been collected and stored at the headquarters of the Government of Sudan’s military division there. *****
