In the view of international media watchdogs, press freedom in Sudan has improved since the government said in late 2001 it was lifting censorship of all the country’s main daily newspapers .In August 2002, President Bashir authorized opposition political parties to operate .The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, in its survey of 2002, reported: "Sudanese journalists say they have some freedom in their daily reporting and that restrictions, including prior censorship, occur less often today than in previous years."But periodic government crackdowns against independent papers have continued
.The Paris-based organization Reporters Sans Frontieres noted in its annual report for 2002: "Despite positive changes such as allowing opposition parties and reaching agreement with the SPLA, press freedom was under attack throughout the year. Many journalists were arrested or called in for questioning and independent newspapers were censored."President Bashir’s latest pledge to lift press censorship, if it translates into action, will go a long way to breaking down the climate of self-censorship and fear that Sudanese journalists say they still operate under.
President al-Bashir has lifted censorship of the press in Sudan by the security service .A presidential decree issued on 12 August2003 transferred responsibility for overseeing newspapers from Sudan’s National Security Agency to the semi-autonomous National Press Council. The president advised the council to "keep the country’s interests in mind" when making decisions.
In May 2005 Al-Wafaq , a Sudanese newspaper published excerpts from a book entitled "The Unknown in the Life of Prophet" written by ‘Al-Makrizy' (a pseudonym). The book was posted on different websites a long time ago. When the book was published in Al-Wafaq it aroused outrage, violent protests and demonstration against the owner and editor of the newspaper, Mohamed Taha Mohamed Ahmed. Demonstrators called for the journalist to be charged of apostasy..
Sudanese authorities have reimposed daily censorship of newspapers May 2008 after they published reports accusing the government of backing Chadian rebels. Authorities prevented opposition newspaper al-Rai al-Shaab from being published on February 14 for trying to print columns accusing the government of backing Chadian rebels.Shortly afterwards, security agents summoned editors of five newspapers for questioning over articles about changes in the upper-level positions of the police force. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) welcomed an agreement by Sudanese authorities to end censorship after journalist union leaders brought together a group of newspaper editors in a concerted effort to strengthen ethical journalism and media independence in the country Abril2008.Sudanese security forces have closed The Arabic-language Al-Wan newspaper indefinitely for publishing sensitive military information that might be linked to a rebel attack on Khartoum at the weekend 10 May .
