Quote: Dear ....., On Thursday evening, AASG Associate Simon Deng was hit by a car while he was on his way home from work in New York. The accident was a hit-and-run; the driver has not been apprehended. He broke several ribs and experienced some internal bleeding. Simon is still in the hospital, but he is conscious and we expect him to recover. We don't yet know how long he will stay in the hospital or when he will be able to return to activism with AASG or his job as a lifeguard on Coney Island. AASG associate CJ Lonoff wrote us after visiting Simon this weekend, “The good news is that through all of this awfulness, he is our Simon Deng. His spirits are good and he is upbeat, even though he is obviously experiencing discomfort and pain.” As always, we feel inspired by Simon’s fortitude and ability to persevere. We are reminded once again that Simon is a survivor—through much adversity, as now, he has looked to the future and refused to be discouraged by present hardship. Many of you have had the opportunity to meet Simon or hear him speak; still more have been inspired by his tireless commitment to making a better world for his people in Sudan and for all the world's enslaved. We know many of you would like to send your well-wishes to Simon as he makes his recovery.
