-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sudan Blocks Google Arabic Translation Posted: 12/21 From: Mathaba
Sudan fears Arab masses will read Mathaba and other free news
The Sudan military Islamist dictatorship regime is blocking Google online translation of web pages, Mathaba can report.
In an effort to boost communication between people across borders created by languages and thus foster better understanding, some companies have provided free online translation tools allowing Internet surfers to read web pages translated by computers into their own languages.
Google provides one such service in Beta testing, which also provides translation of web sites and pages to and from Arabic into various other languages such as English, French, German, Italian, Portugues, Spanish, Chinese etc.
"This is a nightmare come true for dictatorial regimes such as the Sudanese one" Mathaba's Adam King said today when informed of the blocking of Mathaba Arabic service in Sudan. "The Sudan dictatorship regime does not care about the minority of well educated English speakers, but services which allow web sites and free news services such as provided by Mathaba, to be read by the masses in Arabic, is something that they fear would allow people to bypass the state-controlled media."
Any sites using the Arabic online translation provided free of charge by Google are blocked by the regime's telecommunication company "SudaTel". It is not yet clear what method is used to block, but the Google IP 64.233.179.104 is not blocked, however the translation service on that IP is blocked to people in Sudan, King confirmed.
