There is nothing more painful and traumatic than separating children from their natural parents. We, the parents of these children whom the social services removed from our custody on the basis of physical abuse, regret the unfortunate and isolated incident which gave rise to the present situation.
Our three children now are under the custody of a foster family. We, the parents, would like to express our deepest and genuine remorse. It was a disciplinary action taken by the father in good faith. Without any intention to cause physical or psychological injury. But we regret this action and pledge to you that it will never happen again.
We are a close-knit , loving, caring, and young family from Sudan. It is not unacceptable, in our culture and custom, to resort to physical punishment, in a measured way, to effect discipline and good upbringing of children. Children that are decent, obedient, respectful of their parents, their siblings, their elders, their peers and of the community at large.
We ask you, with due respect, to consider the greater harm which is resulting from this forced separation from our children. The youngest is a baby, who is still breastfeeding. His mother, like any mother of normal and humane feelings, is deeply traumatized and anguished by this temporary separation. She became sick, physically sick, by not breastfeeding her baby in regular intervals. The bond between her and her baby, which started from conception, is severed now, under the present circumstances.
We ask you, to make it possible that we reunite with our beloved children. This traumatic separation might, indeed, harm their emotional and psychological welfare. We promise you that what happened shall never happen again.
To this effect, we have -as witnesses- the undersigned members of the Sudanese community all over the world. They appeal to your humanity, your kindness, your good judgement and wisdom, so that we will be able to reunite our distraught family whose hearts are broken now, and whose children are traumatized by this unfortunate and temporary separation. In your humanity we trust. And look forward to reuniting with our children, because we are their natural, loving, caring and responsible parents. God bless you all.
The undersigned:
