President Bashir reaffirms Sudan's support for the Arab League's role

Khartoum, 14 July (SUNA) - President Omar Bashir has reaffirmed Sudan's full support for the Arab league, providing all it could so that the League could play its role towards the Arab Nation.

The President reviewed in a meeting held at the Republican Palace with the visiting Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Abul Ghaith, Sudan's initiative with regards to Arab food security, stability and peace realization in Darfur as well as the exit of the UN-AU peace keeping mission (UNAMID) from Darfur.

The President also briefed the visiting Secretary of the Arab league, Abul Ghaith, on the overall situation in the country and in Darfur region in particular as well as the situation in neighboring south Sudan.

The Secretary of the Arab League, Abul Ghaith, has pointed out in press statements following his call upon the president of the Republic, that he was happy to visit the Sudan and that his first visit as secretary General of the Arab league be to the Sudan, reaffirming the unlimited Arab league support for the Sudan.

He stressed that all initiatives put forwards by Sudan would be the subject of consideration during the coming Arab league to be held in Mauritania's capital of Nouakchott and that he would give them his personal attention, saying the Arab league has already prepared a report on the initiatives of the President of the Republic on food security.

He said a draft resolution would be submitted to the Arab League on the issue of finding a funding for the project.

He said the Arab League would continue supporting and backing the Sudan to eclipse any harm that might befall the country and its leadership from the so-called International Criminal Court ICC.

On call for granting South Sudan the status of an observer in the Arab league, the Secretary General said the Arab league charter does not permit this but that he would work to convince member states into granting southern Sudan the status of a Special Observer.

He said he would also submit a report to the Arab Council of Ministers next September on how to overcome the situation in South Sudan, referring to the Israel endeavors to besiege the Arab countries, citing the recent visit of the Israeli prime minister to a number of African countries.

With regards to the situation in Syria, the Secretary General has pointed out that it was unlikely that Syria would regain its seat within the league, as the opposition and the government have to agree on the issue.

On his part the State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Obaidallah Mohamed Obaidallah said Sudan welcomed the visit of the Secretary General of the Arab League and backs him to carry out his duty under the current challenging circumstances the league is facing.

He stressed that the Sudan would back and support the newly appointed Arab League Secretary General an cooperate with him in every way that would boost the bonds between the Arab league and the Sudan
