Commemorate Social Injustice day 20thFeb 2007

Definition: “Injustice unfair treatment; a situation in which the rights of a person or a group of people are ignored.”

In commemoration of the World Day for Social Justice, I salute and commend the courage of victims of injustice everywhere worldwide, and Sudan in particular. Injustice is an evil, which ought to be condemned and eradicated. International bodies and institutions across the world have adopted numerous covenants and laws meant to protect all people irrespective of their differences, and have celebrated this as an achievement for humanity. But these laws are futile without mechanisms to reinforce them. Sadly, these mechanisms have been non-existent or hindered by special interests, and the case of Sudan serves as evidence of this.

Social justice is a paramount principle to sustain peace worldwide – an important tool to ensure peaceful coexistence for the diverse communities that inhabit this world, and without which the world would be ungovernable. Social justice is attainable, but requires lasting peace and a democratic system.

Peace is not only the absence of war but also the absence of injustice in a society; as such, peace and social justice are interdependent. A superficial peace based on the denial and suppression of basic human rights and needs is built on a foundation of quicksand.

Sudan is lacking a lasting peace, which can only be achieved through the provision of the population’s basic needs. The realization of this goal will require a redirection of resources from the destruction of life toward the improvement of physical and social conditions that are fundamental to the support of human life.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to peace everywhere. Injustice started in Sudan’s modern history with the Sudanization of governmental positions after independence and has continued until today. Social justice issues occur in Sudan at all levels; these issues are a result of unequal wealth and resource distribution, unfair treatment and discrimination against individuals based on race, culture, religion, and gender, and a power structure that supports segregation.

The SPLMN, as one of the armed forces, was driven to war due to this systemic injustice. We believe that relying on military force to solve Sudan’s problems is a detrimental strategy with excessive cost to the economy and human lives. As such, the comprehensive peace approach was adopted. After the last 50 years of injustice in Sudan, we recognize the need to rebuild a society based on democratic values, social justice and human rights.

In essence, this means that the purpose of democratic transformation in Sudan is to ultimately create a society based on social justice. In order to achieve social change, dignity, equality, and the advancement of human rights must serve as the cornerstone from which society will be created and maintained.

Transformative constitutionalism gives a more holistic quality to the New Sudan, meaning that social justice can only truly exist when the quality of life of all individuals has improved to a point whereby the potential of each person is unlocked.

Today, as the international community celebrates World Day for Social Justice, I have some queries: what is injustice؟ Is it not standing up for what you believe in؟ Is it turning a blind eye to those close to you being hurt؟ Is it causing that hurt؟ Sudan is filled with unjust actions that happen every day and are known to people.

In the two areas and Darfur, war has continued unabated by the SAF and supporting militias; human rights abuses are habitual practices that happen in broad daylight at a few yards’ distance from UNAMID forces; denial of access to these areas by the government against international humanitarian law under the nose of the same enactors of those covenants. Bashir has managed to put all Sudanese under one ladder of fear of prosecution, while on the other hand smartly playing the role of terrorism fighter, a concept that appeals to some circles in the international community; those who subscribe to that are categorically bad apples in the international community. Bashir is an indicted predator, appeasing him and his system amounts to turning a blind eye to alarming issues in Sudan and supporting injustice.

As we celebrate this social justice day, the SPLMN asks the regional and international community, as well as all concerned stakeholders not to let this celebration pass without strong condemnation of the Khartoum regime and Predator Bashir specifically. Sudan deserves peace, dignity, freedom, human rights, eradication of corruption and good governance. The Sudanese people deserve unity in diversity.

Achieving social justice in Sudan is far from reality as it currently lacks a fundamental element - comprehensive peace. For this reason, The Sudan Call has advanced a roadmap for the resolution of the conflict adopted by the AUPSC 539; Khartoum rejected it, and by doing so squandered another chance to resolve the conflict. Only a truly inclusive and well-arranged national dialogue will resolve the conflict, one that commences with the cessation of hostilities and humanitarian access. It is preposterous to conduct dialogue while bombs are raining on the same people concerned with the dialogue, and it is impossible to conduct meaningful dialogue when human rights are suffocated, the media is consistently and heavily censored, POWs and political detainees are marooned in dark-cells, and when the agenda is selectively set by one party to lead to its desired objective. This current dialogue will not end the war or contribute to lasting peace, will not improve the deteriorating economy, will not answer the question of how Sudan is going to be ruled, and will therefore never achieve social justice.

In conclusion, I urge the concerned regional and international community to remain focused on the issues of injustice in Sudan and continue to endeavour together with stakeholders to achieve peace and end injustice in the country.

The international community must have the courage to stand up to the injustices practiced by Khartoum against its citizens. It must fulfil its obligations towards the Sudanese communities affected by the regime’s injustices.

I cannot conclude this without pointing out that Sudanese youth and women and political forces in the opposition all have a commonality: injustice has been indiscriminately inflicted on them in different forms. They must use this commonality as a base for unity against the regime – to reform it or change it and bring about justice and democracy. Change is inevitable. Sudanese Oyee.
