The legislative council of El Butana locality in eastern Sudan's El Gedaref state has warned of a food shortage, as a result of the dry weather conditions that have hit pastures and water sources.

An official in the council, Ismail Abdallah Hamad, said that more than 40,000 head of cattle are at risk of dying because of the dryness in the reservoirs, caused by a shortage of rain this year.

With the late start of the rains and a delayed harvest in many places across Sudan, the lean season will continue into early November, instead of ending in late September/early October,andnbsp;according to the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) Food Security Outlook Report for October 2015.andnbsp;'Poor households and people affected by conflict will likely face an increase in food insecurity during this year’s lean period.'

The network expects southern El Gedaref state to witness a Stressed food insecurity situation from October until the end of 2015.andnbsp;Also displaced people in conflict-affected areas of South Kordofan, Blue Nile, and Darfur are likely to remain food insecure with many areas experiencing Crisis (IPC Phase 3) levels of food insecurity.andnbsp;
