Today's UK. NEWS PAPERS

    Daily Express
p.31 Asylum 'fiasco': Failed refugee kicked out of Britain is sent straight back from Africa.... and you pay
Bungling Home Office staff spent thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money when they tried to deport an asylum seeker but forgot to check whether she had her passport. Zenab Traore, 24, and her 16-month-old daughter Mariam were accompanied by three immigration officials on a 3,000-mile trip to her native Guinea. But immigration officers would not allow her in because she did not have any documents.

    Daily Mirror
    p. 8 Asylum boss rap
A boss at the Immigration service discriminated against a black member of his own staff, an employment tribunal has ruled. Executive officer Marva White could now get thousands of pounds in compensation after her action against Terence Neal, who is a deputy director with 500 staff handling asylum cases.

    The Guardian
    Fast-track asylum idea for refugees
A fast-track recognition scheme for asylum seekers who clearly qualify as refugees has been put forward by leading British migrant welfare and human rights organisations. Their working paper, Refugees: Renewing the Vision, also argues that the Home Office should be replaced by an independent body in deciding asylum applications. The alternative policy has been drawn up the Refugee Council with 10 other organisations, including Amnesty International, Oxfam, immigration lawyers, Refugee Action and the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants.

    The Independent
Aid agency pulls out of Afghanistan
The Nobel prize-winning relief agency Medecins Sans Frontieres said today that it was pulling out of Afghanistan because of the killing of five of its staff and the danger of further attacks. The group said it was also leaving because it was unhappy with a government investigation into the 2 June deaths and with the "co-optation of humanitarian aid" by US-led forces there "for military and political motives".

    The Times
Island in the middle sinks under a tide of refugees
A speck of hot, dusty rock in the Mediterranean, Lampedusa has become a magnet for refugees from all over the world. In the past four days alone more than 700 immigrants have arrived from Africa, the Middle East and Asia, swelling the tiny island's sole refugee camp to bursting point. Another 50, including women and children, arrived at dawn yesterday, several of them suffering from dehydration.

Sudan ready to fight foreign intervention
Sudan's Goverment ordered a general mobilisation yesterday and gave warning that it was prepared to resist with force foreign intevention in Darfur, scene of the world's most severe humanitarian crisis.

    Daily Telegraph
More than 200 North Koreans fly to the South for a new life
More than 200 North Korean refugees flew into Seoul yesterday, the largest group of defectors from the Stalinist privations of the North to the capitalist South.
